Christ the King Lutheran Church

Christ the King Lutheran Church Christ the King Lutheran Church is an Inclusive RIC Congregation of the ELCA with Two Campuses in Houston, TX. We are the home of the Bach Society Houston.

Christ the King Church, a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, spans two unique campuses in Houston, Texas, and is an inclusive community welcoming people of all cultures, races, sexual orientations, and gender identities. We are committed to the mission of proclaiming the message of God’s reconciling work revealed in Jesus Christ and proceeding in the Spirit of God. We shar

e a common faith with Christians everywhere who baptize in the name of the Father, and the Son, and Holy Spirit. Our faith is expressed in the rich liturgical life of the congregation, our baptism, and our celebration at the Lord’s Table. We continually educate children and adults to appreciate the elusive but real presence of God in the world and to bring faith to expression through our actions as a caring community.

We pray for the leaders, voting members and others gathering for the assemblies of the East-Central Synod of Wisconsin, Florida-Bahamas Synod, New England Synod, Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod and Northwestern Pennsylvania Synod, that the Spirit will strengthen, guide and inspire them as they reflect on the mission of the church, choose leaders and encourage one another to proclaim the gospel, serve our neighbors in need and work for justice and peace. Connect: The Martyrs of Uganda (d.1886) are honored today on the Episcopal Church's Liturgical Calendar while the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer remembers, on the anniversary of their ordination to the priesthood, Richard Busch (1960), Judith Stevens (1988), Bud Williams (1989), and Aimee Eyer-Delevett (2000).

Reflect: "Christianity was introduced to Uganda by Anglican and Roman Catholic missionaries in the 19th century. They were well-received by the powerful king of Buganda, Mutesa. However, he was not converted, and he was succeeded by King Mwanga, a degenerate and perverse individual who sought a return to primitive animism. He expelled missionaries and began systematically terrorizing the native Christians. Many were flogged and mutilated. In 1884 three youths were burned to death for their faith. They were said to have approached martyrdom singing the favorite Swahili hymn, “Daily, daily sing the praises.” We do not know how many Christians died in this persecution but, between May 25 and June 3, 1886, at least 32 were martyred, most of them on a great pyre at Namugongo." -- Forward Movement; more here: https://prayer.forwardmovement.org/calendar/the-martyrs-of-uganda

Act: Let us pray today's collect, "O God, by your providence the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church: Grant that we who remember before you the blessed martyrs of Uganda, may, like them, be steadfast in our faith in Jesus Christ, to whom they gave obedience, even to death, and by their sacrifice brought forth a plentiful harvest; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen."

Gracious God, we give thanks for those who have died and claimed their baptismal promises especially Gail Glass who rest in Christ’s peace with Mary, Mother of God and her kinswoman Elizabeth; Justin, martyr at Rome; the martyrs of Uganda; John XXIII, Bishop of Rome; Boniface, bishop of Mainz; and all the saints. Strengthen us to live as they did in communion with you. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Author and historian William Stell will be at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church on June 3, 2026 at 7:00pm to discuss this book Born Again Q***r. Stell has written an informative history of evangelical gay activism in the 1970s and 1980s and in so doing, undermines the common assumption that the evangelical movement has always been non-affirming of LGBTQ persons. At the heart of this book is a powerful message: we must move beyond the all-too-common conception of evangelicalism as pure adherence to “what the Bible says.” The discussion will be held in St. Bede’s Chapel with a reception to follow. The Rev’d Allen Junek, Palmer’s Associate Rector, will facilitate the discussion. Please join us!

O God, you send the Holy Spirit to gather your church into one. Inspire all ministers of the gospel to speak prophetic and hope-filled words to all whom they encounter. Bless the work of interreligious dialogue. Guide our parish leaders as they seek to discern members of a Call Committee as we prepare to seek the one you send to be our next pastor. Loving God, hear our prayer.
