We were deeply saddened on Tuesday to learn of the death of Dolly Parton who died at the age of 80. A bright shining light not just in the world of entertainment, but also in the world of philanthropy. The granddaughter of a Pentecostal preacher, she had a deep and abiding faith in God, telling one interviewer that her prayer life was “come as you are.” Her charitable efforts were many and varied, but they tended toward those most in need. Books mailed to children; meeting with a group of junior high students in her home county in Tennessee and telling them to “find a buddy” and that if they both graduated high school, they’d each receive $500, but if one of them didn’t then neither of them would. The district’s dropout rate went from 30 percent to 6 percent with her offer.

She was also a strong advocate for human rights and human justice, using her platform to press for causes that often challenged her many fans to see everyone as worthy of love.

Come and join us for this year's Houston Pride Parade!
The Houston Pride Parade, originally set for June, has been rescheduled to August 15. St. Paul's has been part of this parade for many years, and we're walking again. We believe every person is beautifully and wonderfully made in God's image, and this parade is our chance to show the wider city the open and loving church that all of us who visit weekly already know — sharing that with the thousands of Houstonians who line the parade route. We hope you can walk with us! We'd love a big group to join our contingent this year. For more information or to sign up, visit www.stpaulshouston.org/inclusivity. We were deeply saddened to learn last week of the passing of our dear friend Darryl Bates. For over three decades, Darryl was the first face nearly every child who attended St. Paul’s School saw as they walked in the door. We celebrated his retirement at Christmas 2024.

Services for Darryl will be at 11 a.m., Saturday at Sugar Land Mortuary, 1818 Eldridge Road, Sugar Land, with interment to follow in Huntsville

We offer this from the Book of Common Prayer:

Into thy hands, O merciful Savior, we commend thy servant Darryl. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech thee, a sheep of thine own fold, a lamb of thine own flock, a sinner of thine own redeeming. Receive him in the arms of thy mercy, in the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints of light. Amen.
