Our son Andrew was smart, fun, enthusiastic . . . and he talked. A lot, All the time. He could rattle off "Mommy!" 42 times a minute. Ever the creative mom, Trisha invented "Quiet Playtime." And she sold it to Andrew with the perfect pitch: "Andrew, you're going to have Quiet Playtime every afternoon! For an hour you will be able to close your door and play with whatever toys you want, and no one will bother you! Doesn't that sound great!" He loved the idea. Trisha wasn't trying to find a time to take a nap, or even to get a lot of things done. She was looking for a time of peace each day. Because she knew peace would renew her heart and mind (and ears!) so she could continue to be the Mom she wanted to be. Peace restores and creates a setting for transformation. No wonder peace is a fruit of the Spirit. Join us Sunday at 10:45am in person or at bit.ly/WMBC-YouTube as we experience the peace of Christ.

It's all in how you look at it. Sure it is miserably hot and humid in Houston, but no earthquakes! Yes I have a flat tire, but the other 3 are fine! Sure I am stuck in traffic, but...um...give me a sec...OK, got it: but at least I'm going somewhere! And, according to the tortoise and the hare, slow and steady wins the race! Joy comes from the inside (the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart), so it's there. We just need to find it and stir it up a bit. Perspective makes all the difference in whether you will be joyful or miserable. God’s joy makes us happy, and happiness is contagious. And God’s joy makes us strong. Join us Sunday at 10:45am in person or LIVE at bit.ly/WMBC-YouTube to be reminded that the joy of the Lord is your strength.

Sometimes I get stuck on the need to understand as much as possible before moving forward with something. Understanding is important. But what do we do when confronted with situations that are not easily understandable? I don't understand how airplanes fly. No idea. But I choose to fly anyway because there are places I want to go that are far away. Sometimes we need more understanding. And sometimes we need courage to move forward without the complete knowledge we seek. When Jesus ascended into heaven, he left the disciples with a lot of unanswered questions. But he also left them with New Power through the Holy Spirit that would enable them to move forward building God's kingdom, even if they didn't have it all figured out. Join us Sunday at 10:45am in person or at bit.ly/WMBC-YouTube as we discuss New Power that is available to all who follow Jesus.

One of my parent jobs was to serve as math tutor as needed. It all worked out pretty well until our daughter was taking Algebra 2 in High School. I could often come up with the right answer - I just couldn't always explain how I got there. I also had a habit of talking to myself (and sometimes arguing with myself) out loud while working on problems. One night, after one of my confusing self-debates, I looked at Rebecca and asked her if my work made sense. I was met with polite silence. Then I looked at her and said, "You're firing me, aren't you?" And with a swift nod my tutoring days were over. It wasn't that she didn't want some help. She just wanted some New Help. Don't we all? Gratefully, Jesus tells us God gives us a helper forever - the Holy Spirit. Join us this Sunday at 10:45am in person or at bit.ly/WMBC-YouTube as we discover New Help for a lifetime.

Our son Andrew was 2 when his little sister Rebecca was born. He was very excited about her joining our family and was really sweet for a week or two. But then his excitement turned to disappointment because he figured out she couldn’t do anything but just lay there. He was expecting a playmate and got a baby that ate and slept. It’s been 33 years since Andrew’s expectations came crashing down. Imagine if nothing had changed since then – that Rebecca was an adult who lived like a infant. That is the picture Peter paints for his audience in 1 Peter 2. Join us Sunday at 10:45am in person or at bit.ly/WMBC-YouTube as Peter describes our New Status in Christ, and challenges us grow up in our salvation so we might taste and see that the Lord is good.

For many years, WMBC mission team members have served the Rio Grande Valley. This Memorial Day weekend a team will travel to Harlingen, TX where they will serve children and families in the local communities, flood survivors, people facing food and clothing insecurities, homelessness, and extreme poverty. This team offers essential support and hope by showing vulnerable individuals that they matter and are loved. We can make a significant difference in their lives, and your participation in making this impact is welcome. We went on our first cruise last year, and a friend said to us before we left, “On a cruise, the most important thing to remember is that you are a 4 year-old. They do everything for you. They take care of you in every way – they tell you where to be when so you can eat or sightsee or play or rest. You don’t have to think at all. Just show up and do what they tell you to do and it will be a great trip.” The key to enjoying a cruise is to be a good 4 year-old. The Bible calls that being a good sheep. And the key to enjoying abundant life is also to be a good sheep. Join us Sunday at 10:45am in person or at bit.ly/WMBC-YouTube as we talk about good sheep and a Good Shepherd.

Sometimes what we need is another chance - a do-over, a mulligan. If I hit the putt one more time I know I can sink it. But sometimes what we need is a new awakening. We need to see the big picture differently. We need a deeper understanding. One putt doesn't matter much unless you understand grip and setup and reading the green and making allowances for the wind. The disciples on the road to Emmaus knew the facts surrounding Jesus' death, and had heard about an alleged resurrection sighting. They thought they needed more information, but what they actually needed was New Awakening. They needed to see the big picture of Scripture differently. They needed deeper understanding as to why Jesus came in the first place. Join us Sunday at 10:45am in person or at bit.ly/WMBC-YouTube as we seek our own New Awakening in our walk with Christ.

My Dad was a great storyteller – lots of details, great delivery. And that was good because he had a lot of stories to tell. An alarming number of his larger-than-life stories were actually true (my grandmother confirmed many of them with a heavy sigh). But Dad also made up a lot of stories on the spot, telling them also with great confidence. When he got started telling his stories, doubt filled the room - sometimes a shadow of doubt, sometimes a monsoon. Doubt is not the opposite of faith. Actually, doubt is a part of faith that can help lead us to renewed belief. Join us Sunday at 10:45am in person or at bit.ly/WMBC-YouTube as we look to Doubting Thomas for instruction in, and inspiration for, living with renewed belief.
