For WMBC's 5th Sunday Day of Service in August, we partnered with Community of Resources (COR) Houston. Throughout the month, about 640 toiletry items were donated by our church family and this past Sunday 17 girls toiletry kits and 19 boys toiletry kits were assembled, plus about 60 extra items that COR Houston can use to add to other kits, as needed. Thank you so much to all who donated and helped with this project!

It has been nearly a week without a senior pastor, and we still have a lot of questions. While I don't personally have all the answers, I do think we have an opportunity to learn something from what the followers of Christ found important in the early church. What might be revealed to us if we too devote ourselves to the apostles' teaching, to fellowship, and to prayer?

One song says, "What the world needs now is love sweet love." Another asks, "What's love got to do with it?" While the first statement gives us a warm feeling inside, the second question is likely the one we consider more often. As followers of Jesus we are all about love. But many times love can be hard to find or identify. There are times when what we feel is anything but love, which makes us doubt and question if love is all we think it is. Join us Sunday at 10:45am in person or LIVE at bit.ly/WMBC-YouTube as we look at the Scriptures to better understand a life of love and answer the question, "What's love got to do with it?"

Don’t you love free stuff? It’s hard to beat something for nothing. Every time I get something for free, I feel like I’m getting away with something. Like when someone gives me a ticket to a game or concert. Or when there is a manager’s special and I get free chicken-minis at Chick-fil-a. Or there is a BOGO coupon at HEB. Free gifts are the best. The Apostle Paul said our salvation is a free gift from God. It is not earned or deserved. It is a gift we can choose to receive through faith. We are grateful for the grace we have received in Christ, but often it is not easy for us to dispense grace to others. We want people to get what they deserve, good or bad. It feels wrong for someone to escape punishment or be forgiven. But we are perhaps never more like Jesus than when we live a life of grace. Join us Sunday at 10:45am in person or LIVE at bit.ly/WMBC-YouTube as we discuss the giving and receiving of real grace.

To find the best examples of worship look at pop culture instead of sanctuaries. For my generation and above, think about the crowds that saw Elvis or the Beatles, screaming and crying at the sight of them. For the generation behind me, think Michael Jackson and the crowds that surrounded him everywhere he went. Today the best worship I see is directed at Taylor Swift. Her fans dress like her, get tattoos of her, and have shut down the internet over everything from album releases to concert tickets to wedding announcements. Her "Eras" tour broke 18 different concert tour records. The "Swifties" are fully devoted followers who feel deeply about all things related to Taylor. And everyone around them know it. Maybe we don't need a church full of screamers with Jesus tattoos (or maybe we do!), but we sure could use a few more devoted followers of Jesus who feel deeply about all things related to Christ. Worship is not an event - it is a way of life, and an opportunity for everyone to know our life is about Jesus. Join us Sunday at 10:45am in person or LIVE at bit.ly/WMBC-YouTube as we seek to respond to God with true worship.

Most professionals are looking for their masterpiece. They are on a life-long quest for the perfect accomplishment – for a moment of greatness and highest achievement. Sprinters want to run a perfect race. Artists want to paint a perfect painting. Architects want to design a perfect building. Doctors want to perform a perfect operation. Professors want to give a perfect lecture. Everyone is looking for their masterpiece – even preachers. I’ve been trying to craft my masterpiece sermon for decades. I’ve been in the neighborhood a time or two, but have never scaled that summit. Until now. Sunday will be the masterpiece. The delivery might fall a bit short, but I’m confident the content is there. If you are in need of a masterpiece, please join us this Sunday at 10:45am in person or LIVE at bit.ly/WMBC-YouTube as we begin to wind down the Long Goodbye.

“Mr. Taylor, you need to cut out sugar for the next 3 months.” I couldn’t believe it. I thought my doctor liked me! But I figured she knew best so I set out to live sugar-free for the next 90 days. What the doctor didn’t know was that someone had brought us some cookies the night before. Snickerdoodles. My favorite. I thought about arguing the cookies should be grandfathered in but decided I needed to do what she said. When I got home the cookies welcomed me with great enthusiasm. I stared at the cookies. I leaned in and inhaled their intoxicating aroma. I poked a cookie. First with my finger. Then with my tongue. But I didn’t eat one. I showed self-control (at least for that day). Is willpower all there is to self-control? Surely there has to be more, especially when thinking of it as a Fruit of the Spirit. Discipline yourself to join us for a dive into self-control this Sunday at 10:45am in person or LIVE at bit.ly/WMBC-YouTube.
