Over the past couple of weekends, we collected canned food items for the Fair Haven Food Pantry through our ‘Feed the Need’ drive. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to donate 338 pounds of food! Thank you to everyone who contributed to feeding our neighbors in need.

Our June communion offering was for Houston Welcomes Refugees, which was held on UMC’s “Peace with Justice Sunday.” Peace with Justice Sunday advocates finding peaceful resolutions together by supporting the development of social justice ministries in every Annual Conference. Houston Welcomes Refugees mobilizes our city to welcome refugees with compassion, hope, and honor as they resettle and start a new life in Houston.

We want to shout out the twenty volunteers (18 from the Fellowship class) who helped pack 6,280 bag lunches for pre-school kids facing food insecurity at the Kids’ Meals facility in Spring Branch. Houston ranks #1 in the U.S. of large metropolitan cities with this issue. Kid’s Meals delivers 12,000 lunches daily. Thank you to those who volunteered to make this impact!

The Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD) has been recognized as a “District on the Rise” and spotlighted in the Education Scorecard, released by Harvard University, as one of only 108 school districts out of more than 14,300 nationwide, and the only district in Texas, to demonstrate continued academic growth in both reading and math at a more accelerated rate than their peers. In this case study, the "Reading Buddy Program" was mentioned directly, which was launched in collaboration between Chapelwood UMC - Houston and Spring Branch Independent School District! Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers who have served in the program and helped make a genuine impact on the next generation!

Chapelwood is fundraising again for Free Wheelchair Mission (FWM) during their May Move for Mobility Campaign. Russell Van Nuis, along with Stephanie Hill, will be hosting another Move for Mobility Walk on Saturday, May 30, at 8:00 AM at Memorial Park. We’re so grateful for their continued leadership and heart for this effort. FWM is a humanitarian, faith-based, non-profit that provides free wheelchairs to people with disabilities living in developing nations (over 1.5 million wheelchairs delivered to 95 countries). FWM has designed a robust & fit for purpose wheelchair that can be manufactured & delivered for only $108/wheelchair.
