Annunciation Catholic Church

Annunciation Catholic Church The Church of the Annunciation is the oldest Catholic Church still in use in Houston today, making it the "mother" of all Houston parishes. Pastor: Rev.

Paul Felix Annunciation Catholic Church was the second Catholic Church established in Houston and was an outgrowth of the original St Vincent’s established in 1839. It was the work of the Very Rev. Joseph Querat, a canon of the Cathedral in Lyons, France and a missionary to Texas from 1852 -1878. In 1866 the bishop of Galveston, Claude M. Dubuis, purchased from Peter W. Gray the half block at Texa

s and Crawford streets for $2,000. Texas architect Nicholas J. Clayton designed the structure using the Gothic forms of European cathedrals. The bricks from the old Harris County Courthouse were purchased and used for the construction of the church which was started in 1867 and completed in 1874. On April 25, 1869, the cornerstone was laid by dignitaries who marched to this site from old St Vincent’s; the sacristy and steeple were added between 1881 and 1884. Standing near the business center of Houston, Annunciation was the home of the city’s early leaders and has continued to minister to the faithful of Houston and thousands of visitors each year. Although the founding pastor planned an edifice in a style worthy of a Cathedral, it never gained that status. The church is located at the corner of Texas Ave and Crawford and is the oldest existing church building in the city. Nicholas J. Clayton was the man most responsible for the remarkable buildings found in Houston and Galveston. In addition to Annunciation Church, Clayton's work includes the Bishop's Palace, St Patrick's, St. Mary's, Sacred Heart, St. Mary's University, St. Mary's Cathedral in Austin, and Ursuline Academy in Dallas and many others...

Annunciation was recorded as a Texas historic landmark 1969.

Fr. Felix made these by hand- and every material was chosen with purpose.

Four one-of-a-kind rosaries are up for silent auction this Saturday at the St. Joseph Altar. Volcanic rock and semi-precious jade beads, a "Tree of Life" crucifix drawn from the Dogwood Legend and the Sunday Liturgy of the Hours, medals honoring St. Michael, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady Untier of Knots, and the Divine Mercy. Two for the men, two for the ladies. Each comes with a rosary pouch and a devotional prayer card.

All proceeds support the Marian Daughters scholarship program and the upkeep of our beloved parish.

Today, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of St. Joseph — Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, foster-father of the Son of God, and Patron of the Universal Church.

As you pray today, ask for his intercession. For your family. For the Church. For the grace to do what needs to be done without needing the credit.

Ave Maria! On March 25, we celebrate the patronal feast of our parish—the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord.

We warmly invite you to join us for an evening of sacred music, solemn liturgy, and thanksgiving as we honor Our Lady and give thanks for the gift of our parish church.

This year, we also mark a remarkable milestone: our beloved Pilcher Opus 1206 pipe organ celebrates 102 years and will be rededicated.

Our organ remains unaltered. It sounds today as it did when newly installed in 1924, which allows worshipers an opportunity to appreciate this historical sound in its undiminished beauty, a living witness to the continuity of worship and beauty in the heart of downtown Houston.

We thank all our donors & volunteers who supported this project.

🎵Schedule for the Evening
- 6:30 PM – Blessing and Rededication of the Pipe Organ
- 6:45 PM – Organ Preludes performed by Catherine Schaefer
- 7:00 PM – Latin Mass
- Reception in the Foley House following Mass

On this feast day, the Church grants a plenary indulgence to the faithful who devoutly visit their parochial church. To obtain the indulgence, one must recite an Our Father and the Creed during the visit, together with the usual conditions: sacramental confession, reception of Holy Communion, prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff, and complete detachment from sin.

We encourage all parishioners and friends of Annunciation to take part in this solemn celebration of our patroness and to join us in giving thanks for the beauty and sacred heritage entrusted to our care.

In today’s culture, your child is learning about sexuality whether you’re ready or not. And often, the first voice they hear—online, at school, from peers—sets the tone.

If you're not the one guiding them, someone else will.

Even faithful Catholic parents and educators often know Church teaching but feel unequipped to explain it, especially when it comes to tough topics like LGBTQ+, po*******hy, or abortion. Many didn’t receive this kind of formation themselves.

That’s why we’ve invited Dr. John Bertini, a Catholic physician and grandfather, to walk with you.

If you are a Catholic, grandparent, or educator looking for faithful, practical ways to address tough questions - sign up for this talk.

Don't wait. Your children—and their future—are worth the investment.
