Our History

In 1971 Dr. Allen J. Hines was commissioned by Bishop J. Patterson, Sr., Presiding Bishop of the Church Of God In Christ, Inc., to organize a system of Bible Colleges for the Church Of God In Christ, Inc. Dr. Hines developed and successfully instituted the pilot school at his church, Garden of Gethsemane COGIC in Houston, Texas. On November 11, 1972, Dr. Hines reported the success of

the pilot school. The COGIC General Assembly ratified the proposal and the system of Bible Colleges was named Charles Harrison Mason System of Bible Colleges. Committed to his call, Dr. Hines traveled six years across the United States totaling an average of 150,000 air miles establishing 87 Bible Colleges. Mason Bible College-Houston prepared thousands of men and women for ministry service for 46 years. Satellite campuses were established in Beaumont, Texas, Jasper,Texas, and Hungerford,Texas. The Institute provision was added to offer special training opportunities. The college later became known as C. Mason Bible College & Institute (CHMBC&I). Founder’s Day, Black History Recognition, Chapel Services, Woodard-Hines Institute, and the CHMBC&I Christmas Banquet were annual events in addition to Commencements. In 2018 the Houston Campus closed. The CHMBC&I faculty, alumni, staff, regents, and supporters remain connected and treasure the memory and legacy of Dr. Allen J. Hines and the C. Mason Bible College & Institute.
