This morning's discussion continued our conversation from last week: society and our framework for common living. Our conversation was rooted in a student wondering aloud whether we should be evolved past using money as the basis for most transactional relationships, particularly as money as a resource and as ticket to accessing resources needed for living (education, food, housing, etc.). This morning we wondered together what it means for us if society's values framework rests on an idea of scarcity and what our priorities would be if we moved to a framework of abundance.
We didn't get to the end of our discussion or even to the second question but we did come up with a bar graph imagining our collective spending to reflect the shared values of our class. The bar graph contains very basic budget categories for a society. The students worked together to come up with the following percentages:
Education: 15%
Housing: 15%
Healthcare: 25%
Defense: 20%*
Transportation: 10%*
Infrastructure: 15%*
*-fluid exchange between these categories dependent upon need
We also decided housing, education, healthcare, transportation and infrastructure include safety net programming.
Talk back to us! What would you change if you we making the "budget"?
