ASSOCIATION FOR EPISCOPAL DEACONS
Interim Executive Director -- Role Profile
Coverage Period: May 1 -- September 30, 2026
About the Role
The Association for Episcopal Deacons (AED) is seeking an interim Executive Director to provide organizational continuity during the approved leave of absence of the current ED, Carter Hawley. This is a part-time, temporary position expected to run approximately five months, from May 1 through September 30, 2026. The current ED is expected to return at the end of that period.
This role is designed for coverage and continuity -- not transformation. The right candidate will be a steady organizational presence who can keep essential functions moving, support the board in its governance work, and maintain the confidence of AED members and staff.
Organization Overview
AED is a national nonprofit chartered in Rhode Island serving approximately 750 paying members and a broader community of roughly 2,800 Episcopal deacons. The organization supports deacon formation, community, and advocacy within The Episcopal Church. AED operates with a small staff and relies on board leadership and volunteers for much of its work.
Reporting Relationship
Hours and Compensation
• Part-time: 10 to 15 hours per week on average
• Exempt, contract position
• Compensation is $20 per hour
• Remote work; occasional availability for board calls and organizational meetings required
Core Responsibilities
The interim role is organized around four areas. The first two are primary; the second two require light coordination only.
1. Board Governance Support (Primary)
• Prepare agendas, pre-read materials, and draft minutes for full board, executive committee, and finance committee meetings
• Manage post-meeting follow-up and action tracking
• Maintain regular communication with the Board Chair
• Support the executive committee in any decisions requiring ED input during the coverage period
2. Member Communications and Engagement (Primary)
• Oversee outgoing member communications in coordination with the Communications Director (Anne Pillot)
• Respond to member inquiries and route issues as appropriate
• Provide light oversight of the Membership function (Hilary Greene), who is expected to operate with significant independence
• Monitor Bloomerang (member database) for issues requiring ED attention
3. Financial and Compliance Oversight (Light)
• Participate in monthly bookkeeping call with Treasurer Geof
• Approve routine compliance items as needed (990s, payroll, Church Pension Fund, Rhode Island registration)
• Escalate financial concerns to the finance committee as appropriate
What Is NOT in Scope
To keep this role workable at 10 to 15 hours per week, the following are explicitly outside the interim scope:
• Strategic planning or organizational development work
• Membership growth initiatives or new program development
• Fundraising or grant writing
• Day-to-day management of the Communications Director (Anne operates independently)
• Conference planning (A3D 2026 concludes May 1 to 2 at the start of the period)
Ideal Candidate Profile
• Demonstrated experience in nonprofit management, organizational administration, or a closely related field
• Comfortable working directly with a volunteer board in a governance-support capacity
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to represent the organization professionally in correspondence and member-facing communications
• Self-directed and able to prioritize well with limited supervision
• Familiarity with Episcopal Church culture and polity is a plus, but not required
• Prior experience in a membership organization is helpful
• Experience and comfort in using on-line communication and financial systems a plus
Transition and Onboarding
The current ED will be available throughout April to support transition planning and onboarding. Transition materials, SOPs, and handoff documentation will be prepared before the leave begins. The incoming interim should expect a structured onboarding period in the final two weeks of April.
