We have some exciting news to share with our AED community!

Executive Director Carter Hawley is beginning a planned personal leave of absence on May 3, returning October 1. We celebrate this well-deserved season of renewal and look forward to welcoming her back in the fall.

During Carter's leave, we are thrilled to welcome Grace Swinski as our Interim Executive Director. Grace is a deacon, an archdeacon, and a seasoned nonprofit leader with decades of experience in community coordination, operations, and grant management. She is exactly the right person to carry AED forward during this season.

Reach Grace at: [email protected]

We are also excited to announce that Dcn. Hilary Greene has joined our staff as Membership Director! Many of you already know Hilary from her volunteer work with AED. We are so glad to welcome her into this expanded role in service to our deacon community.

Reach Hilary at: [email protected]

Phone and mailing address remain the same. AED is in good hands, and we are grateful for your continued support and partnership.

From Deacon Ken Rackley:

I am a Deacon in Nevada. I am building my ministry with the local Sheriff's Office and Volunteer Fire/Medic department. I would like to see if there are other Deacons that are doing a ministry with first responders. Thanks for your help.

AED is seeking someone who can serve as Interim Executive Director from May 1 - September 30, 2026. At the end of September, we expect the current ED to return. This position is part-time (10-15 hours a week), with well-defined tasks.

If interested, please read the ED role profile (attached). Then submit your resume, cover letter, and 3 references (names) to Geof Smith via FB messenger .smith.3

We will review applications starting on April 16th. We hope to extend an offer soon after.

Here is the information:

ASSOCIATION FOR EPISCOPAL DEACONS

Interim Executive Director -- Role Profile
Coverage Period: May 1 -- September 30, 2026

About the Role
The Association for Episcopal Deacons (AED) is seeking an interim Executive Director to provide organizational continuity during the approved leave of absence of the current ED, Carter Hawley. This is a part-time, temporary position expected to run approximately five months, from May 1 through September 30, 2026. The current ED is expected to return at the end of that period.

This role is designed for coverage and continuity -- not transformation. The right candidate will be a steady organizational presence who can keep essential functions moving, support the board in its governance work, and maintain the confidence of AED members and staff.

Organization Overview
AED is a national nonprofit chartered in Rhode Island serving approximately 750 paying members and a broader community of roughly 2,800 Episcopal deacons. The organization supports deacon formation, community, and advocacy within The Episcopal Church. AED operates with a small staff and relies on board leadership and volunteers for much of its work.

Reporting Relationship

Hours and Compensation
• Part-time: 10 to 15 hours per week on average
• Exempt, contract position
• Compensation is $20 per hour
• Remote work; occasional availability for board calls and organizational meetings required

Core Responsibilities
The interim role is organized around four areas. The first two are primary; the second two require light coordination only.

1. Board Governance Support (Primary)
• Prepare agendas, pre-read materials, and draft minutes for full board, executive committee, and finance committee meetings
• Manage post-meeting follow-up and action tracking
• Maintain regular communication with the Board Chair
• Support the executive committee in any decisions requiring ED input during the coverage period

2. Member Communications and Engagement (Primary)
• Oversee outgoing member communications in coordination with the Communications Director (Anne Pillot)
• Respond to member inquiries and route issues as appropriate
• Provide light oversight of the Membership function (Hilary Greene), who is expected to operate with significant independence
• Monitor Bloomerang (member database) for issues requiring ED attention

3. Financial and Compliance Oversight (Light)
• Participate in monthly bookkeeping call with Treasurer Geof
• Approve routine compliance items as needed (990s, payroll, Church Pension Fund, Rhode Island registration)
• Escalate financial concerns to the finance committee as appropriate

What Is NOT in Scope
To keep this role workable at 10 to 15 hours per week, the following are explicitly outside the interim scope:

• Strategic planning or organizational development work
• Membership growth initiatives or new program development
• Fundraising or grant writing
• Day-to-day management of the Communications Director (Anne operates independently)
• Conference planning (A3D 2026 concludes May 1 to 2 at the start of the period)

Ideal Candidate Profile
• Demonstrated experience in nonprofit management, organizational administration, or a closely related field
• Comfortable working directly with a volunteer board in a governance-support capacity
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to represent the organization professionally in correspondence and member-facing communications
• Self-directed and able to prioritize well with limited supervision
• Familiarity with Episcopal Church culture and polity is a plus, but not required
• Prior experience in a membership organization is helpful
• Experience and comfort in using on-line communication and financial systems a plus

Transition and Onboarding
The current ED will be available throughout April to support transition planning and onboarding. Transition materials, SOPs, and handoff documentation will be prepared before the leave begins. The incoming interim should expect a structured onboarding period in the final two weeks of April.

I’m not as pessimistic as this post but a good reminder of our role to be a prophetic voice WITHIN the Church as well as outside her.

I suggest seeing the Church... I'm talking about the system, the organization... as having narcissistic traits. Everything is fine as long as you agree and participate with it. The moment you criticize it or challenge its authority, it will think of ways to destroy you.

Please join me in the inaugural AED Virtual Book Club. We'll be reading, "How to Read the Psalms Again for the First Time: A Spirituality for Justice Seekers and Peacemakers," by Dr. Clint McCann.

He looks at the Psalms from a God-centric perspective, versus a human perspective, which turns the psalms into amazing statements of God's values, "which means the issues of (racism, hunger, homelessness, global warming, violence, poverty) are not only social, economic, scientific, ecological, and political issues but also manifestly spiritual issues as well, about which God cares."

He further argues that Psalm 82 is the "single most important text in the Christian Bible." After reading his book, you might agree!

We'll meet twice a month, on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 Eastern, beginning October 14. This is open to all AED members.

Registration will take place in the AED Membership Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/224758414227437. Please join that group to register for this great opportunity.

If you first need to become or renew your membership to AED, you can do that here: https://crm.bloomerang.co/HostedDonation?ApiKey=pub_eec89332-e910-11ed-9e40-02ec082f7523&WidgetId=44204033.

Hope to see you there!!

Starting in the Fall, we will resume our twice a month opportunities for fellowship and prayer on the first and third Mondays at 4:00 Pacific / 7:00 Eastern, IF WE GET HOSTS.

I have a video that I will send to anyone who wants to host a month for these rich conversations.

We gather to some music, pray, look at the upcoming Sunday's readings, and have a good deacon-centric conversation about the readings. A little more prayer and music, and we're done.

The leader's responsibility is to pull together a document with the readings, the prayers, and find some music that's appropriate. Youtube and google are great tools to find something appropriate for Advent I, for example. Finally, the leader sends me a list of who attended.

If you are interested, in being a leader, comment below, and I'll reach out to get you the training info, and find out when you can host.

Thank you all.
Carter Hawley, Executive Director
