Is tallow bad for your skin?

If you follow me you KNOW that I’m not one of those tallow is a for everyone product.

You also know I’m evidence based so I’m not going to share misinformation in favor of tallow.

That said ….. there’s a lot of buzz going around about tallow not being good for skin care, about it even being harmful or damaging over time. You can guess who pushes this information…. Dermatologists, Cleveland clinic, some estheticians ..allopathy……

You may also even see some formulators who will say this same thing

“it’s damaging”
“it’s bad for skin”
“tallow will wreck your skin”

However the sources are often lacking; they’ll pull articles with no studies, they’ll cite their own opinion as an “expert” In a field where frankly they don’t actually teach you about tallow.

The truth is tallow isn’t widely studied for skin care. So for them to have such a ….. strong opinion of it and to speak it from an evidence based stance is at best misleading.

Tallow is what one would call ancient skin Care. So a lot of the “evidence” is personal testimonials. I did come across one link which was a meta analysis of other data pulled to conclude tallows safety and if it’s of benefits for skin care and I’ll link that below. 👇🏻

As I said I don’t advocate as tallow being a holy grail one size fits only thing for skin care. I may not be a certified consultant or esthetician but I do research 🔬 because it’s so important to know what you’re doing and what you’re talking about when you’re not only formulating but educating. So I can tell you confidently that skin care isn’t one size fits all and when you look at it from a whole body healing approach you learn so many things tie into how our skin looks and feels.
For example - when I was hydrating upon hydrating for an unrelated issue my skin was so much more hydrated. My skins hydration came from within. I found water based products don’t work well for me either but for someone else they might. Diet impacts acne, hormones impact acne, deficiencies can impact elasticity and so on and so forth.

All of this said…. As I got side tracked 😂 the entire purpose of this post is to dispel the misinformation that tallow is bad for your skin. Across the board. It’s so much more nuanced than this and naturally as I said I’m sharing a link for study because often times they’ll try to say that my information can’t be trusted since I sell tallow 🫣 you can’t argue validity with a study though 😅

Let’s talk the dangers of DIY

As yall know I do conduct in house challenge testing. For anyone who doesn’t know - challenge testing is.

Essentially I make the product; I test it initially I then introduce bacteria to it through how it’s intended to be used in normal circumstances and how it maybe used in abnormal circumstances. This is includes storage ect. Then I conduct tests on it for mold, yeast/fungi/ and bacteria at different time period intervals. This gives an idea of shelf stability under what conditions. It guides the safety of a product and how to instruct use for when it could be introduced to unsafe conditions. This also gives you your expiry dates.

That said ….. back to the purpose of this post …DIY

This wasn’t a DIY this was a product I formulated as a potential launch and was testing out for yall and it FAILED. I’ve shared before my failed recipes so I have no qualms sharing it again. (No it’s not the conditioner 😮‍💨).

The images? The product that is loaded with bacteria. 🦠 ? It’s clear. You’d never know without testing. And this isn’t just a diy I found online. I had an idea that it might fail based off my knowledge of formulation. Every failed hypothetical formula is a learning opportunity for me. However being that this was something made and formulated by a formulator that failed it just emphasizes how dangerous DIY can be.

This isn’t a fear mongering DIY post. This isn’t someone just trying to p*e in your Cheerios and make you feel like you can NEVER diy. It’s a safety post because information matters and that includes risks.

All of that said …. So how can you safely diy? 👉🏻get your DIY from a trusted source. Don’t just use Google or different recipes floating around

👉🏻 a good rule of thumb is that if it has water consult an experienced formulator, research, most importantly do not extend the shelf life of the product.

👉🏻 if you’re newly DIY don’t over complicate it. Not everything needs water or you can create shelf stable concentrates to dilute per use so you’re not compromise your health and the safety of your family.

👉🏻 research the ingredients and how they interact to make sure it’s a good fit for you. I see so many people try diy with Castile soap and be disappointed with its performance. Come to find out it was combined with something like vinegar which can impact its saponification and create …. Well goop 😅 or they had hard water and didn’t know it might react to minerals Creating a film. For you Decyl glucoside maybe a better choice.

Moral of the story? DIY isn’t evil but it can be done in ways that aren’t safe and not every recipe on the internet has been tested for shelf stability and performance.

We’ve added an option at check out to opt for priority shipping. The 9$ is subtracting the amount that we allocate to our prices for the free ground shipping.

It is not required for you to order priority this is just an option for those who want a shorter transit time.

This will not expedite fulfillment time. As we stated in our shipping post it would still be the 7-10 business days for fulfillment unless communicated otherwise with me and Eli. Priority only shortens transit time to 2-3 days vs 5-6 and encourages USPS to be more prompt than they are with ground orders. 🤍
