Family Havdalah celebrated Sukkot with a service led by Rabbi Sam Rheins and some of The Miriam Browning Jewish Learning Center’s children and teens. And the evening wouldn’t have been complete without our annual Sukkot salad bar and a candy Sukkah!

Special thanks to our Family Havdalah band Michael Mason, David Scott, Marc Sherman, and Gabe Katz.

During the Yamim Noraim, we’re tasked with the weight of serious introspection in front of the Divine as we also ask the Divine for the blessing of another year of life.

Drawing upon these words of faith, hope, and peace from the Mishnah, CCAR President Rabbi David Lyon—Senior Rabbi of Congregation Beth Israel - Houston, TX—asks us to examine our past with honesty as we ask for a better tomorrow:

"In the New year:
May we be conscious of God, Who gave us life.
May we know God’s love by giving love.
May we know God’s forgiveness by forgiving others.
May we experience God’s peace by seeking peace.”

Snapshots from opening night of "Seeking Joy," The Margolis Gallery's newest exhibit.

On loan from the Heller Museum at Hebrew Union College in New York City, "Seeking Joy" celebrates moments of Jewish joy and resilience through a meaningful and inspiring collection of works. The exhibit opening brought our community together for an evening of art, music, food, and thoughtful conversation—a beautiful way to enter the High Holy Days season.

"Seeking Joy" is on view through the end of 2026. We invite you to stop by during office hours, or after Shabbat services on Friday evenings, to experience the collection for yourself.

It was a special evening for families at our Back to School Family Shabbat! Rabbi Adrienne P Scott, along with some help from Beth Israel children and teens, led us in a meaningful service, accompanied by beautiful music from David Scott, Michael Mason, and Marc Sherman. After services, we enjoyed delicious Texas BBQ and prepped for the school year by decorating our own bento boxes. We look forward to seeing you at our next Family Shabbat on September 26, where we will celebrate Sukkot and end Shabbat with Havdalah!

In his recent blog, Rabbi Lyon writes:

Boy George, who rose to fame in the 1980s as lead singer of Culture Club, and who was countercultural in his day, discovered his humanity despite bigotry and hate that surrounded him in his life. His empathy and wisdom endured. With clarity through the thickest and densest bigotry and racism reflected in today’s hatred of Jews and Judaism, he saw humanity in us. Despite it all, he discovered that the only right place to stand “when one is confused,” his song announces, “is with the Jews.”
