What a morning at The Gathering Place! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Last week we celebrated with a patriotic theme β€” chair exercises, arts & crafts, entertainment by the wonderful Julia Laskowski, BINGO, and a delicious kosher lunch. But as always, it was the smiles, the music, and the connections that made it truly special.

The Gathering Place meets monthly at CBY, offering a warm and welcoming environment for individuals experiencing memory loss due to Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, stroke, or other forms of dementia β€” free of charge, every time.
Our next gathering is Thursday, June 25th. Participation requires registration with Care Partners Texas β€” click here to get started and we hope to see you there! πŸ’™β€οΈξ–ξ€»ξƒξƒ»ξƒΉξƒŽ

Choose Life. Don't Hide. Be Proudly Jewish.

The times we are living in are not easy β€” but Rabbi Strauss reminds us that Moses had an answer for moments like these: V'charta BaChayim. Choose Life.

Choosing life doesn't mean ignoring the difficulty. It means showing up anyway. Wearing your Star of David. Putting a mezuzah on your door. Coming to synagogue. Living your Jewish values openly and proudly.

This week, choose life.

The CBY family came together yesterday for our Annual Meeting β€” and what a celebration it was! πŸŽ‰ We recognized trustees joining, continuing, and completing their service on our Board of Directors.

Congratulations to Steve Finkelman as this year's Steve Rudoff Minyannaire of the Year πŸ†, and a heartfelt thank you to Rabbi Danny Horwitz for his years of dedicated service as our Torah reader. Rabbi Horwitz isn't going anywhere β€” he'll continue teaching and staying active with our Chapel minyan. We are so grateful for all he does for CBY. πŸ™
So proud of this community. Here's to a wonderful year ahead! πŸ’™

This beautifully serene portrait of a Jewish man in study is by Lazar Krestin, a Polish-born artist (1868–1938). Krestin was a meticulous genre painter who specialized in scenes of Jewish life in Poland before the Second World War.

In true Rembrandt-esque style, light streams from the upper left, illuminating the subject's forehead and face. He is dressed in a shtreimel β€” the fur hat that distinguished well-to-do Jews in Eastern Europe in the 19th century β€” and a tallit. Notice the care with which Krestin renders the subject's hands and the folds of the tallit.

A photo doesn't do this portrait justice. Come see it in person at the Mollie and Louis Kaplan Museum of Judaica, along with our vast collection.

This Memorial Day, we remember the Jewish Americans who have proudly served and sacrificed for this country.

Did you know that more than 50 Jewish Americans have earned the Congressional Medal of Honor? Among them was Sergeant Tibor "Ted" Rubin β€” a Holocaust survivor who immigrated to America and served in the Korean War. Captured as a POW, he risked his own life to protect and feed his fellow prisoners β€” embodying the Jewish value of pikuach nefesh, the sanctity of human life.

Today we honor his courage and the courage of all who served. זיכרונם ΧœΧ‘Χ¨Χ›Χ” β€” May their memories be a blessing. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έβœ‘οΈ

40 and fabulous β€” that's our Ashley Mills! πŸŽ‰ Ashley pours her whole heart into everything she does at Beth Yeshurun, from programming for our youngest children to leading seniors on a casino trip. We could go on and on about how much she means to our CBY family β€” but her aunt said it best:

And Ashley β€” forty, sharp and wise,
With quick bright thoughts and watchful eyes,
The kind of mind we all admire
Alive with humor, warmth, and fire.

No detail ever slips away,
She'll quote the joke from yesterday,
Remember stories, dates, and more
The things the rest of us ignore.

Then comes mahjong, and all take heed,
For Ashley's got the skill and speed,
She reads the tiles with calm precision,
A masterclass in quick decision.

Happy 40th, Ashley β€” we are so grateful for you! πŸŽ‚βœ¨
