Our Opening Sentences for Pentecost Sunday were from Prayers for a Privileged People by Walter Bruggemann.

We hear the story of the wind at Pentecost,
Holy wind that dismantles what was,
Holy wind that evokes what is to be,
Holy wind that overrides barriers and causes communication,
Holy wind that signals your rule even among us.

We are dazzled, but then – reverting to type -
We wonder how to harness the wind,
how to manage the wind by our technology,
how to turn the wind to our usefulness,
how to make ourselves managers of the wind

Partly we do not believe such an odd tale
because we are not religious freaks;
Partly we resist such a story,
because it surges beyond our categories;
Partly we had imagined you to be more ordered
and reliable than that.

So we listen, depart, and return to our ordered existence:
we depart with only a little curiosity
But not yielding;
we return to how it was before,
unconvinced but wistful, slightly praying for wind,
craving for newness,
wishing to have it all available to us.
We pray toward the wind and wait, unconvinced but wistful.

Please join us for worship this Sunday, May 24.

Laura Mayo writes:

Wear red for Pentecost (if you so desire)! We will celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit this Sunday. There was no missing the Spirit that first Pentecost. What are the signs of the Spirit’s presence in our day? How do we experience the mighty rushing winds of the holy in our lives? What are we compelled to do and say by the gathering of sacred gusts?

The Covenant Singers will sing "Come Down, O Love Divine" arr. Philip R. Dietterich this Sunday in worship before going on summer break.

During the 2025-26 program year, the choir sang forty anthems, two major choral works, and nine enthusiastic rounds of "Happy Birthday" at our monthly choir birthday celebrations. Current members range from fifteen years old to approaching ninety, covering every decade in between.

And, they have fun! Over the past year, the choir enjoyed our annual Christmas party, an Easter Egg Hunt (there is still at least one egg left in the sanctuary), various other celebrations, and an End-of-Year Awards Gala last Thursday night, where the altos won Best and Brightest Section (no surprise here).

We are so thankful for the choir's ministry with and among us.

Please join us for worship this Sunday, May 17.

David Lee writes:

This Sunday, the Covenant Singers are presenting Jazz Missa Brevis by acclaimed English composer, pianist, and jazz musician Will Todd. His anthem titled “The Call of Wisdom” is a favorite anthem of the Covenant Singers. The work contains simple melodies with intricate, sometimes "spicy" jazz harmonies. It has been an exceptionally fun work to learn, and it will be equally delightful for listeners. The entire service will be accompanied by the Rob Landes Trio.

Text: Psalm 47

Earlier this month, we said goodbye (for now) to Brendon Young as our 2026-2027 Artist in Residence. Brendon is an extraordinarily gifted musician and a warm and loving person. He joined us in worship to play solo music and collaborate with our choir. He helped us with community outreach projects and shared his spiritual and musical journey. He enthusiastically wore a fruit shirt for Fruit Shirt Sunday. He taught us not only what a bassoon is, but why we should care. Brendon has greatly enriched the life of our congregation. We hope to keep seeing him for years to come.

Brendon's position at Covenant was funded by a grant from the University of Houston Moores School of Music's Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. We are so excited to be offering this residency again in the coming school year—more information to come soon!

Please join us for worship this Sunday, May 10.

Laura Mayo writes:

This chapter from John has become one of my favorite passages in the Second Testament. I get caught by the abiding language, and in this Sunday’s particular verses, by the idea of adoption. Jesus is preparing the disciples for his absence but he promises they will not be abandoned. The Holy Sprit is coming. They will not be orphaned. As we prepare to celebrate, once again, the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, how do we lean into these promises?
