Gospel for the Tenth Sunday of Summer

When you are invited to a banquet, do not sit in the first place, lest someone more important, who has also been invited by the one who invited you both, comes and says to you: give him this seat, and then, to your confusion, you will go down to the last seat.

When you are invited, go and sit down in the last place, so that the one who invited you will say to you: my friend, come up higher. Then you will be honoured in front of those at the table with you: for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself
will be exalted. When you give dinner or supper, don't call your friends, your brothers, your parents, your rich neighbours, lest perhaps they in their turn give you back what they have received from you. When you have a feast, invite the poor, the disabled, the lame and the blind. You will be glad that they have nothing to give you back.

From our service today celebrating the Descent of the Holy Sophia.

The readings on this special day remind us of the Holy Wisdom of God as the feminine redemptive presence in the World and of the very loving presence of God which is His Shekinah.

As it says in the Book of the Wisdom of Solomon: “By means of her I shall obtain immortality, for she is the Mother of fair Love, and of patience and of perseverance, and of holy hope. Thou shall put Her on as a robe of honour, and shalt put Her about thee as a crown of joy.”

What a wonderful message of positive spirituality. A spirituality that embraces the joy inherent in the world and the potential of all human beings to reach the abodes of the eternal. A spirituality which embraces the Divine Feminine.

We are also reminded at this time that the Holy Sophia overshadowed the two principle feminine figures of the Gospel stories, the Holy Mother of the receptacle of Christ (Jesus) Mary, and the Consort of that incarnation of the Christ Mary Magdalene. As it says in the Gospel of Phillip: “The Sophia whom they call barren is the mother of all Angels. And the consort of Christ is Mary Magdalen.”

But more important perhaps than this Gospel commemoration is the realisation for us as Gnostics that the Descent of the Mother was not only for the benefit of the historical Jesus but also for the benefit of our very souls. The Holy Sophia is Mother and Consort to our own Divine Spark and Christic Presence. We are called to take joy in Her and in this sacred relationship and all the illumination and sustenance She has to offer us on our path of Return and Reintegration. We are therefore called to nurture this relationship.

Some Pharisees came up to him to put him to the test; they asked him, ‘Is it lawful for a man to send away his wife for any reason?’ He replied, ‘Haven’t you read this? From the beginning, the Creator made them male and female, and said, For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.

Let no man separate that which God has joined together.

They said to him, ‘Why then did Moses prescribe that a certificate of divorce be given before divorce?

Ieshu replied: ‘Because of the hardness of your hearts, Moses allowed you to put away your wives. But in the beginning it was not so.

But I tell you, if a man puts away his wife - except in the case of adultery - and marries another, he is an adulterer.

His disciples said to him, ‘If that’s the way a man feels about his wife, it’s better not to marry.’

He answered them: ‘There are eunuchs here, some of whom have made eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who can hear, let him hear!’

Do not judge and you will not be judged. According to the judgments you have made, you will be judged; according to the way you have measured, you will be measured. Why do you see a speck in your brother's eye and not a beam in your own? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take this speck out of your eye,' and you have a beam in yours? Hypocrite, first remove the beam from your own eye, and then you will remove the mote from your brother's eye.

Gospel for the Seventh Sunday of Summer

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where rust and worms gnaw, and thieves search and steal. For where your treasure is, there is your heart. You cannot serve two Masters: for you will love the one and hate the other. You cannot serve God and Mammon. That is why I say to you: do not worry about your life, how you will eat, nor about your body, or how you will live. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, they neither sow nor eat, nor gather in barns. And your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not closer to the Father than they? Which of you by his industry could add an advantage to his state? And the garment, why do you worry about it? See the lily of the field as it thinks: it neither toils nor spins. But I tell you, Solomon in all his glory did not live like one of them. As for the grass of the field, which is today, and tomorrow will be thrown in the hay, God made it so made it so, and how much more you, man of little faith? Do not worry saying: What shall we eat? What shall we drink? Or how shall we dress? The hylics worry about these things, but your Heavenly Father knows that you need them. Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven and righteousness, and the rest shall be added unto you.

Parallels to Luke 7 in the Gnostic Gospels

1. Love becomes Gnosis

Luke 7:47

“Her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much.”

The Gnostic equivalent shifts the emphasis from forgiveness of sins to knowledge born of love.

Gospel of Philip

“The companion (koinōnos) of the Savior is Mary Magdalene. Christ loved her more than all the disciples and used to kiss her often…”

Rather than emphasizing moral forgiveness, Philip interprets Mary’s intimacy with Christ as symbolic of the transmission of divine knowledge (gnosis). In Valentinian symbolism, the “kiss” represents the communication of Spirit or Wisdom rather than merely physical affection.

Take care not to do your good deeds before men, so as to be seen by them, otherwise you will have no merit. Truly, I tell you, they have received their reward. As for you, when you give alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will repay you. And when you pray, you will not be like the hypocrites who like to pray standing up in the synagogues or in the corners of the public squares so as to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward. As for you, when you pray, go into your room with the door closed, pray to your Father in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will hear you. Don't multiply your words when you pray, as the pagans do, for they think they'll be heard by dint of their words. Do not be like them, for all your Father knows what you need before you ask for it. When you fast, don't be sad like the hypocrites, for they wear out their faces so that their fasting will appear to men. Verily, I say unto you, they shall have none of their reward. As for you, when you fast, perfume your head and wash your face, so that it does not appear to men that you are fasting. And behold a woman in the city, which was a harlot, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisees house brought an alabaster box of ointment. And she stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. When the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself: This man if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him; for she is a harlot. And Jesus turned to the woman, and said unto Simon the Pharisee: Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet; but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head. Thou gavest me no kiss; but this woman hath not ceased to kiss my feet. My head with oil thou didst not anoint; but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. Wherefore I say unto thee: Her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much.

The Sophia whom they call barren is the mother of the angels. And the consort of Christ is Mary Magdalen. The Lord loved Mary more than all the disciples and kissed her on her mouth often. The others said to him: ‘Why do you love her more than all of us?’ The Saviour answered and said to them: ‘Why do I not love you like her?’ There were three who walked with the Lord at all times, Mary his mother, and her sister and Magdalene, whom they called his consort. For Mary was his sister and his mother and his consort.
