Monday Devotional: When Life Doesn't Make Sense
Life has a way of blindsiding us. One moment everything seems fine, and the next we're facing loss, illness, or heartbreak that leaves us reeling. When the widow's son died, her first instinct was to blame—both herself and Elijah. She assumed this tragedy was punishment for her past sins. How often do we do the same? When suffering strikes, we immediately start searching for someone or something to blame, including ourselves. But here's the truth: God's people are not immune to suffering. It's part of living in a fallen world. The widow had experienced God's miraculous provision through Elijah's ministry, yet tragedy still came. This reminds us that faithfulness to God doesn't guarantee a life free from pain. What matters is not avoiding suffering, but knowing where to turn when it comes. The biblical model is clear and consistent throughout Scripture: take it to the Lord.
Bible Verse
Why have you hidden your face? How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? - Psalm 10:1
Reflection Question
When facing unexpected tragedy, what is your first instinct—to blame yourself, others, or to immediately turn to God in prayer?
Quote
“The people of God are not immune to suffering. We're not. It's part of life. It's part of the fall. And we're certainly not always going to be protected from grief and loss and even death and dying.” - Brian Offutt
Prayer
Lord, when life doesn't make sense and suffering comes, help me resist the urge to blame and instead turn my heart toward You. Give me the wisdom to know that You are my refuge in every storm.
