The month of July saw many changes for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the greater Houston region with the opening of a new mission, the departure of two mission presidents and their companions, as well as welcoming three new mission presidents with their companions. Before their departure, we were able to interview President and Sis. McMullin. We are so grateful to them for their love and service to the great state of Texas.

Rolling on By….This past year five trucks a week have been making deliveries like this one, with the goal of reaching 250 truckloads in all 50 states to commemorate America’s 250th birthday.

250 trucks.
50 states.
Millions of pounds of food.
Countless people served.
And hundreds of miles driven by people willing to give their time to help others.

So if you see one of these trucks on the road, give them a wave! 👋

And to every driver behind the wheel: Thank you for giving up time with your families to serve families you may never meet. We see you, we appreciate you, and we’re cheering you on! 🇺🇸❤️

❤️ It’s ! ❤️

Today’s Temple Tuesday is from Catherine Barlow, Media Director for the Houston West Communication Council for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“My parents joined the Church in 1975. A year later, they had the opportunity to be sealed for eternity to my sister and brothers in the Salt Lake Temple. I was blessed to join the family the following year.

Growing up, I constantly heard about the importance of the temple and how much it had changed our family for the better. My parents had each of us choose a picture of a temple to hang in our room because they wanted us to always remember the goal of one day entering the house of the Lord ourselves.

The temple is where I go to connect with my Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. It is where I go to better understand Their love for me and the plan They have for each of Their children. Within its walls, I find peace, direction, and a greater understanding of who I am and who I can become.

One of the greatest blessings of the temple is the knowledge that families can be together forever. I love knowing that Heavenly Father, in His perfect love, has provided a way for His children to remain connected to those they love most…not only in this life, but throughout eternity. Words cannot express the comfort this has brought me as I have lost loved ones during this mortal journey.

The temple reminds me that because of Jesus Christ, death is not the end of our story. The relationships we cherish most can continue beyond the grave, and the promises God makes to His children are real. When I walk through the doors of the temple, I am reminded of where I came from, who I belong to, and where I hope to return someday. It strengthens my faith in Jesus Christ, deepens my love for my family, and fills my heart with hope that through Him, families truly can be together forever.”

Today we celebrate Pioneer Day—a time to remember the faith, courage, and sacrifice of the early pioneers who journeyed west in search of a place where they could worship freely.

While July 24 commemorates their arrival in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847, Pioneer Day is also an opportunity to reflect on the pioneers in our own communities—those who lead with faith, serve others, and help build stronger neighborhoods.

Wherever we live, we can honor their legacy by moving forward with courage, compassion, and hope.

President Henry B. Eyring recently taught: “The world today seems to be in commotion. There are wars and rumors of wars…

“Turning to Heavenly Father in fervent prayer when the world seems chaotic is as old as mankind.” President Eyring reminds us that during moments of fear and uncertainty, as we turn to God, He gives us the peace He promised: “Let not your heart be troubled”

Keep checking back for more content. We are so grateful to these wonderful Presidents and Mission Leaders for their love, service, dedication, and sacrifice to the greater Houston region.

There have been many changes in the past month with the opening of a new mission, the departure of two mission presidents and their companions, as well as welcoming three new mission presidents with their companions. Before their departures, we were able to interview our two outgoing presidents and their wonderful companions. That content will be posted throughout the month of July. We are so grateful to President and Sis. Schmutz and President and Sis. McMullin for their love and service to the great state of Texas.

Elder Daniel L. Harris, Area Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, shares today’s Temple Tuesday.

“God has always required His children to have sacred places of worship—places set apart for holy ordinances, sacred events, and where He could manifest Himself to His people. His purpose for this is and always has been to help, strengthen, and to grow His children. Adam worshipped at a sacred altar on Spring Hill. Enoch received a vision on Mount Simeon. The brother of Jared met the premortal Christ on Mount Shelem. Abraham and Jacob worshipped at Bethel. Moses remained on Mount Sinai until the tabernacle was complete. Nephi received a magnificent vision on an exceedingly high mountain and was later commanded to “get thee upon the mountain”, where the Lord taught him how to build the vessel that would carry his family to the promised land. Likewise, in the temple, the Lord teaches us how to reach our promised land.

During His mortal ministry, Jesus often taught in the temple. He took Peter, James, and John to the Mount of Transfiguration, appeared at the temple in Bountiful after His Resurrection, and Joseph Smith had the Sacred Grove, the Kirtland Temple, and later helped lead the building of the Nauvoo Temple. Today, temples dot the earth, bringing these Holy Houses closer to each of His children. I marvel that I can step out of the world, enter the temple, and immediately feel the difference within its sacred walls. Sometimes I have profound spiritual experiences there, but more often I simply feel closer to the Lord as I serve my ancestors.

When my parents were alive, after our visits, they never wanted us to leave without giving us something. Years of temple service have taught me that my Father in Heaven never lets us leave without a gift: personal growth, revelation, greater sensitivity to the Spirit, a stronger testimony, increased priesthood power, deeper gospel understanding, blessings for my posterity, grace, and peace.

So go to the temple.
Enjoy the Spirit.
Strengthen your family.
Build your faith.
Grow in Christ.
Change.
Become.
I am deeply grateful for such a gracious Father.”

Faith and Fastballs

It was a beautiful night at Daikin Park for faith, fastballs, and $1 hot dogs! The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Friends and Family Night at the Houston Astros was a wonderful opportunity for members of the Church and friends from across the Houston region to come together in a spirit of fun, fellowship, and hometown pride. Elder Steven Barlow, General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, threw the ceremonial first pitch.

Families, neighbors, and friends gathered to cheer on the Houston Astros, strengthening friendships and building connections in H-Town! With the return of Yainer Diaz and Hunter Brown from the injured list, and a great showing by Raynel Delgado in his second major league game, it was a great night for an Astros win over the Detroit Tigers.

David and Annette Hruska, Directors of the Greater Houston Region Communication Council for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, contributed todays Temple Tuesday message.

“Prior to our leaving Texas and the Houston area for Guatemala City and our mission, we found ourselves pondering our lives, our families, and prayerfully considering the next 3 years in service of the Lord. We were so nervous about our assignment and leaving home.

We often walked on the beach at Galveston looking for seashells and sand dollars while watching the waves coming onto the shore. We found comfort in God’s creations. Annette took a picture of me one day running on the beach with my arms raised, the surf in the distance. Before we left for our mission in Guatemala, she framed the picture for each of our 5 children, adding the inspired quote, “In the waves of change we find our direction”. She bordered the picture and quote with sand dollar pieces found while walking on the beach.

We first visited the Guatemala City Temple while serving as mission leaders in the Guatemala City Central Mission from 2020-2023. COVID restrictions were finally relaxed in Guatemala, so we were able to enter this beautiful House of the Lord with our full-time missionaries. As the Elders and I left the small chapel to join Sister Hruska and the other Sister missionaries, I stopped in the hall absolutely overwhelmed by a painting on the wall.

This painting depicted a morning sunrise breaking its light in the distance over the waves of the ocean, gently settling on the beach. I had never seen a painting like this in a temple. The scene was so glorious, so peaceful, and so familiar to my heart. “In the waves of change we find our direction”. When I showed the painting to Annette, she too was amazed by the Lord’s tender mercies. We could only say to ourselves, “How Great Thou Art”!

Our finding inspiration from a painting of ocean waves inside the Guatemala City Temple was unexpected and so powerful to a couple new mission leaders looking for peace and direction in the Lord’s Holy House, the temple. What comfort we have found through the ebbs and flows of our lives knowing our Heavenly Father is with us through it all.”
