While We're Waiting Refuge for Bereaved Parents

The Refuge is a retreat facility specifically designed for bereaved parents. www.whilewerewaiting.org

Completed in October of 2016, the Refuge is nestled in the midst of tranquil thoroughbred farms in a quiet country setting with a stocked pond and fifty wooded acres on which to roam. The Refuge is specifically designed for the comfort of bereaved parents, with a welcome center, a large kitchen/dining area overlooking the pond, a comfortable and cozy meeting room, a library/sitting area, an expans

ive deck, and ten hotel-room style bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom. There are no other guests present at the Refuge during our bereaved parent retreats, so parents can fully relax and make themselves at home for the weekend. The Refuge is also fully accessible, with two handicapped-equipped guest rooms.

The name of our ministry is kind of unusual. I was blessed to receive an email a few years ago from a fellow "waiting" mom who expressed what the name means to her, and I just recently ran across it again. With her permission, I share some of her thoughts below ...

"The pain that is involved with losing a child is on the level of never wanting to do anything ever again. Overwhelming and tsunami don't even begin to describe the waters you will swim the rest of your life.

While We're Waiting - just in the name - is a life raft. The name brings us back to the reality that while our child's job and purpose has been fulfilled in God's economy ... ours is not - hence why we are still here.

I think as God has blessed your ministry, He has also blessed the name. It has encouraged me that no matter what ... While We're Waiting, with our eye on the prize ... God still has a multitude of ministry work that He has uniquely 'gifted' us for - given what we've seen and endured.

While We're Waiting has been a rally cry, a battle cry of sorts, that God is Sovereign and that everything we taught our dear sweet daughters is just as true after they left this earth as it was when we could hold their hand and look into their eyes when they were children, AND when they were battling cancer.

While We're Waiting = An impending sense of usefulness of time, talents, and testimony for the Kingdom and for God's Glory. A recognition that an excruciating thing has happened but the faithfulness of God shows He is Sovereign and can be trusted - no matter what.

The name of your ministry through the Grace of God has been a lifeline for me."

** WHILE WE'RE WAITING WEEKEND FOR BEREAVED PARENTS OPENING - NORTH DAKOTA **

We have ONE spot still available for a married couple or single parent at our While We're Waiting Weekend for Bereaved Parents scheduled for June 7-9, 2024, at the beautifully remodeled 100-year-old Nome Schoolhouse in Nome, North Dakota. Lodging and all meals will be provided for our attendees from Friday evening through Sunday morning and there is no cost to attend!

This is a first-come, first-served opportunity and priority will be given to those who have not yet had the opportunity to attend a WWW Weekend.

** WHILE WE'RE WAITING WEEKEND FOR BEREAVED PARENTS IN MICHIGAN - AN OPENING! **

Due to a last-minute cancellation, we have an opening for our While We're Waiting Weekend scheduled for THIS weekend, April 26-28, 2024, at beautiful Blue Spruce Lodge on Stone Lake in the southwest part of the state.

Blue Spruce Lodge features 11 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, a beautiful kitchen/dining area, an expansive deck overlooking the lake, and several comfortable gathering areas. Guests will enjoy the 340 feet of spectacular lake frontage, sandy beach, firepit, and hiking/biking trails. The picturesque town of Cassopolis is not far away!

This event is open to both single parents and married couples, and priority is given to those who have not yet had the opportunity to attend a While We're Waiting Weekend for Bereaved Parents.

Lodging at Blue Spruce Lodge for Friday and Saturday nights and all meals from Friday night through Sunday morning are provided, and there is no cost to attend this event.

It's almost time for Lei Lei's 5K and Memory Mile!

This is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the While We're Waiting ministry and we would love for for YOUR CHILD to be included in it!

This year's event is scheduled for May 4, 2024, at the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center, located at 8300 Wells Lake Road in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

The Memory Mile is a very special part of this race. Bereaved parents (or grandparents, family members, or friends) have the opportunity to sponsor a section of this mile in memory of a child or children in Heaven.

Sponsorship includes a sign with your child's name, his or her picture, and a special quote or verse of your choice, which will be placed along the memory mile route. Your child's name will also be included on the back of the race shirt. Sponsorship is $125, and includes one free shirt.

Additional shirts can be purchased by memory mile parents for just $15 each. After the race, you can take your child's sign home with you ... and if you live too far away to attend, the Holmes's will mail your sign and shirts to you!

To our "Waiting" friends in Europe ...

We will be hosting a While We're Waiting Weekend for Bereaved Parents in the municipality of Saulgrub in Bavaria, Germany, this spring. It is scheduled for the weekend of April 19-21, 2024, and will run from Friday evening through Sunday morning.

Lodging will be provided for Friday & Saturday nights at the Aura Hotel and all meals will be provided. Single parents and married couples are welcome, and there is NO COST to attend this event. Our facilitators would love to have the opportunity to serve you at this event!

** WHILE WE'RE WAITING WEEKEND FOR BEREAVED PARENTS IN ATASCADERO, CALIFORNIA - AN OPENING! **

We have ONE opening for a single parent or married couple at our While We're Waiting Weekend for Bereaved Parents scheduled for the weekend of March 15-17, 2024, at Atascadero Bible Church in Atascadero, California. There are beautiful beaches within easy driving distance of this location, including Morro Bay State Park, pictured below.

This retreat will run from Friday evening through Sunday morning. Lodging for our out-of-town guests will be provided by WWW at the nearby Holiday Inn Express and Suites.

This event is offered at NO COST to those who attend.

This is a first-come, first-served opportunity, and priority is given to those who have not had yet attended a WWW event.
