The faithful servant whom everyone loves. Over 30 years with Garland County Jail Ministry. Witnessing to tens of thousands of detainees. Assistant Chaplain, Board Member, and Author. What more can I say?

This week, the Garland County Jail Ministry has the honor of recognizing Don Henry.

The very first night I ever walked in the jail and taught was with Don Henry. I remember that night like it was yesterday. What stood out to me the most was how comfortable he was with the detainees. Without realizing it, I was watching his every move and taking mental notes. I watched how he taught, how he shook hands, how he listened, and how he kept everyone's attention by allowing them to ask questions.

Unknowingly to him, watching Don that night helped shape my own current teaching style.

His responses to the detainees showed me that he was finely tuned to the Holy Spirit. He spoke with wisdom that did not come from human intellect alone and demonstrated a deep understanding of God's Holy Word. He had a way of making people feel valued while pointing them toward Jesus and that they left with something which is very important.

For more than 30 years, Don has faithfully served Garland County Jail Ministry and currently serves as an Assistant Chaplain. He does an outstanding job. Since he lives nearby and if I am out of the area, there have been many times when I have called on Don to step in and handle a situation. Without hesitation, he has always been willing to serve. He truly has the heart of a servant and a deep love for Jesus Christ.

Throughout his many years in jail ministry, there is no telling how many souls he has led to the Lord. Only Heaven knows the full impact of his faithfulness.

Don also serves as a Board Member and is the author of a book titled "When Nonsense Makes Sense." I recently brought a copy home to read because many detainees have shared how much the book has inspired and encouraged them in their walk with Christ.

For decades, Don has been a pillar of this ministry. His faithfulness, wisdom, and commitment have helped build Garland County Jail Ministry into what it is today. I am truly honored and blessed to serve alongside him.

One thing Don often says to me is, "I appreciate all you do." Every time he says it, I am humbled and a little surprised. The truth is, if it were not for faithful servants like Don Henry, this ministry would not be what it is today.

Don, I appreciate you more than you know. Thank you for your faithful service, your love for Jesus, your dedication to His ministry, and the countless souls you have touched along the way. May the Lord continue to bless you and use you for His glory.

Full time Pastor - Part time jail Minister.
This week, Garland County Jail Ministry has the great honor of recognizing Pastor Derwin Harris of Glazeypeau Missionary Baptist Church in Hot Springs Village.

I have known Pastor Derwin for nearly six years. I know this may sound a little earthly, but Pastor Derwin is one of the coolest pastors I know! 😊 He also delivers a sound Biblical message!

I have visited Glazypeau Missionary Baptist Church several times over the years and have had the privilege of listening to him preach. He gets a little animated at times, but that's because he loves Jesus and is passionate about sharing God's Word.

Every Monday night, Pastor Derwin faithfully comes to the Garland County Detention Center and spends time ministering to the detainees. He brings that same enthusiasm, energy, and the love of Christ to the detainees. The detainees love Pastor Derwin and look forward to his teachings each week.

Over the years, he has built several spiritual relationships with those behind the walls. His classes gives them something to look forward to, but more importantly, it brings hope, encouragement, Biblical truth, and the opportunity for salvation through Jesus Christ.

One thing I truly admire about Pastor Derwin is that he never leaves a class without extending an invitation to salvation. He understands that every class is an opportunity for someone to encounter Christ.

Years ago, I attended a funeral where Pastor Derwin was officiating. Even there, he offered an invitation to salvation. He never lets an opportunity to share the Gospel slip away.

Pastor Derwin, thank you for your faithfulness, your servant's heart, and your commitment to reaching people for Christ.

We appreciate you, your church family, and your dedication to advancing God's Kingdom. Y’all are a blessing to His ministry!

From Detainee to Teacher to
Administrative Assistant

This week, Garland County Jail Ministry, Inc. is honored to recognize Tanya Ellis and celebrate the amazing work God is doing through her life.
Tanya is humble, faithful, and truly has the heart of a servant. She is not only a good friend, but also a teacher who faithfully shares the Gospel of Jesus Christ every week with the detainees at the jail. Her testimony is powerful! It speaks volume to the girls’ hearts as she was once a detainee herself here in Garland County. Today, Jesus is using her testimony to bring truth and restoration to others who are walking through the same struggles she once faced.
Tanya is a solid teacher of God’s Word, and the girls absolutely love her. As she is a funny person in nature, she brings joy, energy, and encouragement into the classrooms which the girls adore. She always makes me laugh as well. 🙂 Through her teachings, several detainees have given their lives to Jesus Christ over the years. As Tanya once experienced hardship, she understands the pain, emptiness, and brokenness many of these women carry. She knows they need Jesus!
Over the years, I have watched Tanya grow stronger in her walk with the Lord. God continues to expand her ministry and use her testimony to reach others. She has also spoken alongside me at mission events, and when she speaks, you can feel the presence of the Holy Spirit moving through her words and testimony. She does a great job.
Today, Tanya serves as an administrative assistant at Harbor House, and I could not be prouder of how far she has come. Her life is a direct example of God’s grace, redemption, and transformation. Her testimony reminds us that Jesus can take a broken past and turn it into a powerful ministry for His glory. -Chaplain Green

82 years old - 37 years of jail ministry - led hundreds to the Lord - Brother Homer Stout.

This week, Garland County Jail Ministry has the honor of recognizing Brother Homer Stout who attends Glazeypeau Missionary Baptist Church.

I have known Homer for a little over five years, and it has truly been an honor. He is nearly 82 years old and still faithfully comes to the jail twice a week. Over these past five years, I can only remember one or two times he has missed. This jail ministry and the detainees are truly in his heart.

He was saved when he was 12 years old, which means he has been walking with Jesus longer than I have been alive. Whenever I need guidance or help making a decision, he is one of the first people I call. His walk with the Lord, faithfulness, and wisdom have been a blessing to me and many others.

Homer has nearly 37 years of jail ministry experience. During those years, he has led hundreds of detainees to Jesus Christ. I can only imagine the day when the Lord calls Homer home and he sees so many former detainees in Heaven because he shared the Gospel with them. What a reunion that will be.

He also serves as a Board Member and Assistant Chaplain for the jail ministry, and he does a wonderful job. Every day before leaving the jail, he asks me, “Anything else I can help you with?” Think about that. At nearly 82 years old, he is still serving others with a joyful heart.

Homer is a true servant of Jesus Christ and a pillar to His ministry. His life shows what it means to stay faithful to the Lord and continue working in the harvest no matter your age. I hope one day I can be half the servant he is. I consider him one of my spiritual mentors. Everyone knows the detainees and I love Homer and look forward to seeing him every week. His life and wisdom has helped me grow spiritually. Such a good guy and a true Saint of Christ.

One moment I must share: one day I walked in the classroom and 82 year old Homer was on his knees praying for the detainees. What a humble and faithful servant. He prays for them through the pain. That speaks volume of who he is.

His wife is also active in the ministry. She grades all Bible studies turned in every week. Some nights she is up till 3 am grading those courses. Thank you Eddie! 🙂 They love our Lord! -Chaplain Green

From Detainee to Teacher to Program Director of Samaritan Ministries Men's Rescue Mission

This week, the Garland County Jail Ministry has the honor of recognizing Josh Vallotton. He once came through the Garland County Detention Center as a detainee, and today he serves as a Bible study teacher in this ministry and serves as the Program Director of Samaritan Ministry in Hot Springs. Praise the Lord!

I have known him for over eight years, and it has truly been a blessing. When I was volunteering at the jail years ago, I gave him a Bible, and he is another who still uses it today.

Over the years, I have watched Josh grow strong in the Lord. He faithfully attends Hot Springs Baptist Church and serves in many capacities. I remember when he was a detainee attending Bible studies in B pod. I witnessed a spiritual transformation take place by the power of Jesus Christ. He was set free from addiction and was born again! PTL!!

Today, he spends his life helping others who are struggling with addiction and homelessness. As the Program Director of Samaritan Ministry in Hot Springs, he works daily to provide people with a place to sleep, food to eat, and clothes to wear. Most importantly, everyone who comes through hears the Word of God. Services are held there every day of the year.

I speak with Josh several times a week trying to place detainees in their soul saving and changing program. Samaritans is one of the four faithed based transitional living facilities, I use to place the detainees daily upon release. They are vital to the community.

He was once the one in need, and now he has given his life to helping others in that same place. That is the power of Jesus!

Josh is a faithful servant who goes above and beyond to serve people in need. He truly loves the Lord. He is a good friend, and when I need a laugh, I call Josh. 🙂 Yesterday he had me laughing all afternoon!

Josh is a living testimony of what Jesus, and the Holy Spirit can do. I am proud of you, and our community is thankful for all that you do. Keep it up! Through Christ you are making a HUGE difference for the Kingdom of God!!
And a special thanks to your amazing wife!

Three Servants home with Jesus - We stay in the the harvest.
(May’s Newsletter)
This week, the jail ministry has the honor of recognizing three faithful servants who have recently gone home to be with the Lord: Robert Stringer, Scooter, and Kandi Rose. They were faithful workers who finished their race and are now in the presence of the Lord who they so faithfully served.

THREE SERVANTS HOME WITH JESUS – WE STAY IN THE HARVEST

Thank you for supporting the Garland County Jail Ministry. Your kindness and generosity are making a real difference in the lives of those who need it most. Through your faithful and generous support, men and women who once felt lost and forgotten are now hearing the Gospel, giving them a newfound hope, forgiveness, and a new life in Christ.
Seven days a week, lives are being touched, saved, and transformed behind those walls. Hearts are being conditioned/softened, faith is being found or restored, smiles and laughs are being shown, and detainees are discovering that no one is beyond God’s loving grace. Your faithful and generous support is making an eternal impact. Thank you for supporting the Garland County Jail Ministry!
This month, I had the newsletter done, ready to be stuffed in the envelopes and was led to start by the Lord to start over. As the ministry experienced the loss of another Saint, I felt it was time to recognize all three of them. This is the most heart aching newsletter I have ever written. I put it off as long as I could. Didn’t mean any disrespect to anyone. I just could not get myself to do it. Starting from the most recent:

Robert Stringer: New Address – 777 Praise and Worship Drive, Heaven

I met Robert Stringer a little over eight years ago at the detention center, where he worked in maintenance. Not long after I started volunteering, he told me he sang praise and worship, wrote his own music, and created his own backing tracks. At that time, I wasn’t in a position to help, but once I became Chaplain, he quickly reminded me again.
I told him, once the ministry was more established and running smoothly, we would revisit the idea. During that time, he would often stop by my office, smile, and say, “I’m ready when you are.” He understood I was busy building the ministry, but he never stopped being willing. That is who Robert was. He was always wanting to do more.
Once we had enough teachers and everything was running well, we finally started praise and worship. It didn’t take long before all the detainees in different housing units asking, “When y’all coming back?” They absolutely loved it.
I truly believe Robert found a new joy in coming to work because of how much the detainees loved him. He quickly became the most loved maintenance worker there. I remember one day he was on a ladder fixing a light and a detainee asked him about Jesus. Robert stopped what he was doing, set his tools down, and took the time to answer every question he could. At that moment, he cared more about that man’s eternal life than finishing his job.
Robert was a true servant of the Lord. He let his light shine brightly among the detainees. He is deeply missed at the detention center, and my wife and I miss him tremendously. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of him.

Praise and worship will continue soon. I will not let what he started fade away. It has proven to be a powerful tool in reaching the lost.

Robert went home to the Lord on April 14, 2026.

“Scooter” James Richard: 777 Faithful Servant Drive, Heaven

I knew Scooter for about five years, and he was a true faithful servant of Christ. He faithfully attended Glazypeau Church and Garland County Jail Ministry every Monday night. He rarely missed if ever.
There are many memories I have of Scooter, but one stands out the most. Scooter was a big man, yet very humble. One night at church, Pastor Derwin asked him to pray over the scriptures before starting the service. Scooter stood up, stepped into the aisle, dropped to one knee before the altar, and prayed. I remember thinking, “What an honorable way to show love and respect to the Lord.” It was powerful and I will never forget that moment.
Scooter built strong and lasting relationships with the detainees. They truly loved him. His classes were always full, and he would always be excited to share the attendance numbers with a big smile on his face knowing he had us beat. I miss seeing that big smile and his loving, genuine presence. Scooter was a lot of fun to serve with. He led many men to the Lord at the detention center.
He was a good man and a faithful servant. Scooter, you are missed, and we will see you again when the Lord calls us home.

Scooter went home to the Lord on March 26, 2026.

Kandi Rose: Come to the Altar Blvd., Heaven

I knew Kandi for nearly ten years, and it was truly an honor to serve alongside her. She was full of passion for the Lord.
Decades back, Kandi openly struggled with addiction but that gave her a strong ability to connect with the detainees. They knew she understood their struggles, and because of that, they listened closely when she spoke.
She spoke with a gentle and loving voice, but also with boldness and authority when sharing God’s Word. She had a special way of reaching people’s hearts.
Kandi never ended a class without giving people the opportunity for salvation or rededication. The number of souls she led to the Lord is something only heaven can fully count. I can only imagine. She was truly one of the Lord’s Generals. She also had a television program that reached people around the world, focusing on breaking spiritual strongholds. Kandi brought so much joy and energy wherever she went. She is deeply missed.
