Sunday’s Hosannas!
Read Mark 11:1-11, Matt. 21:1-11, Psalm 118
Jesus and His Disciples were preparing to celebrate Passover in Jerusalem. He’d sent 2 on ahead to go into the village where they’d “find a c**t tied, on which no one has ever sat.” And He gave them instructions to “Untie it and bring it.” This was the c**t Jesus would sit on and began His triumphant yet humble entry into Jerusalem as King of kings.
Those with Him spread out their coats and palm branches in celebration of His Kingship. They sang out the words of the familiar Passover hymn,
“‘Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!’” Mark 11:9b-10
Did the Jews who witnessed and sang this blessing, realize Jesus was the fulfillment of their Passover Psalm? Did the praises strike a cord or stir a memory? Or were they so focused on their own preparations they missed the enormous sign right in front of them?
Jesus, the true and perfect Lamb, was ready to be “inspected” by His own people as well as their religious courts. Would they find Him to be the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world? Or would they see Him a traitor and condemn Him?
It's the first Sunday of our Easter week celebration.
Today, we can praise God for sending the perfect and spotless Lamb, His Son, to be our final sacrifice. And we can offer the praise and blessing for Jesus fulfilling the prophesy His people had sung upon His entry!
Take time to meditate on Psalm 118. And as you do, consider the scene of Jesus, humbly coming as the King and yet also The Lamb. He came with one purpose, to be the final Lamb, the Perfect Sacrifice for your sins and mine! Jot down some observations and new ways you can offer thanks and praise for Him on this first Sunday of Easter week.
Father God, this is a hard week to celebrate in so many ways – how we wish our Savior did not need to die for us! But, Lord, how grateful we are that He came as a baby, served humbly and walked to the cross willingly to be our sacrifice! We thank You for this Sunday – the day our Lord, the Lamb of God was ushered through the gate to be inspected. We cry “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming Kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest heaven”! In Jesus’ name, with thanksgiving, AMEN
