Please join us for our Easter Sunday service with communion here at St John's Lutheran Church in Hosmer, SD beginning at 9:00 a.m. April 5th, 2026.
The true Easter meaning is the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection. After the quiet reflection of Lent and the sorrow of Good Friday, Easter morning breaks forth in radiant light. The stone is rolled away, the tomb is empty, and Christ is risen. Alleluia!
The story of Easter began over 2,000 years ago in Jerusalem. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, freely offered His life for our salvation. After His death on Good Friday, He was laid in a tomb. Three days later, just as He had foretold, He rose from the dead. This miracle, the Resurrection, became the foundation of Christian faith. As early as the second century, believers gathered each spring to celebrate Christ’s victory over sin and death, honoring the mystery that changed the world forever.
The English word Easter may come from an old Anglo-Saxon term for “spring,” a fitting reminder of new beginnings. But for Christians, Easter is not simply a season, it is the celebration of our Savior. It is the triumph of divine love over the grave.
Christ is Risen. Alleluia!

Good Friday is a solemn day that commemorates the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. For Christians, Good Friday is an important day of the year because it celebrates what we believe to be the most momentous weekend in the history of the world. Ever since Jesus died and was raised, Christians have proclaimed the cross and resurrection of Jesus to be the decisive turning point for all creation. Why is Good Friday called Good Friday? The word “good,” once carried meanings closer to “holy” or “sacred. To Christians everywhere, Good Friday is a sacred day that represents loss, sacrifice, and waiting. It is traditionally observed as a day of mourning, when churches grow quiet and celebrations pause. However, the name is entirely appropriate because the death of Jesus Christ, however terrible, marked the culmination of God's plan to save humanity from sin. It is "good" because it produced the greatest gift imaginable: forgiveness and eternal life.

Isaiah 53:5 — “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

Please join us this evening for our Maundy Thursday service with communion beginning at 6:15 at St John's Lutheran In Hosmer, SD. The attached picture was taken many years ago at one of our Maundy Thursday services depicting the Last Supper.

Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter and commemorates the Last Supper, Jesus washing His disciples’ feet, and His new commandment to love one another. It is an important part of Holy Week because it points Christians to humility, communion, sacrificial love, and the events that led directly to Good Friday.
Why Is It Called Maundy Thursday?
Maundy Thursday gets its name from the Latin word mandatum, meaning “command.” The name points to Jesus’ words in John 13:34, when He gave His disciples a new commandment: to love one another just as He had loved them. Christians remember this day not only for the Last Supper, but also for Jesus' example of humility and service in washing His disciples’ feet.
