"Red House" stood on the watershed between the Potomac River and the Rappahannock River, two miles NE of Leedstown. Dr. and Mrs. William Wirt, the last Payne owners, sold the farm in 1860, reserving the graveyard about 100 yards south of the dwelling. The concrete wall built in 1935 surrounds the 18 remaining gravestones. There are several ancient unmarked graves in the unwalled portion of the graveyard. The original burying ground was 80 feet by 130 feet. The present wall occupies the NW corner of the original ground.
