Not Just What You Say

Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.—Proverbs 4:23

I am convinced that one of the major reasons why so many of us fail to receive from God the things which we ought to be receiving lies in the fact that our hearts and our minds are not properly correlated.

Do you find yourself continually praying for things you never receive? I don’t mean things about which there may be some doubt, but things you definitely know the Almighty longs to give you—love, joy, peace, wisdom, patience, and so on. Maybe your mind is asking for one thing and your heart another. You see, it is possible to want something with the mind which is not supported by the heart. The mind is a much easier part of the personality to deal with than the heart, but, as our text for today states: “Guard your heart … for it is the source of life.”

We can approach God with our minds and think that because we have a clear idea of what we want, God will give it to us, but the heart may contain hidden doubts which prevent us from being fully integrated people. We fail to receive because we are not asking out of a fully integrated personality. As someone has put it: “God does not just answer prayer—He answers you.” Those who wish to receive from God the things He delights to give ought always to
remember that who we are is just as important (if not more so) than what we ask. God is not just listening to our words; He is listening to us.

Prayer
O Father, the more I meditate on the need for heart and mind to be in perfect coordination, the more I am set on fire to become a fully integrated person. I know You are eagerly reaching down to me; help me to be as eager to reach up to You. Amen

“Faith in Two Minds”

If you have faith … even if you tell this mountain, “Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,” it will be done.—MATTHEW 21:21
If we are to have feet like “hinds’ feet,” we must learn how to face and handle any doubts that may arise in our hearts.
Most of us have to face the problem of doubt at some time or another, and unless we have a clear understanding of what is involved when we doubt and how to deal with it, our pursuit of God can be greatly hindered. The English word doubt comes from the Latin dubitare, which is rooted in an A***n word meaning “two.” To doubt means to take two positions on something or to have a divided heart.

A major misconception concerning doubt—and one that has brought great anxiety to many a Christian’s heart—is to view doubt as the opposite of faith, which clearly it is not. Unbelief is the opposite of faith.

Os Guinness puts it like this: “To believe is to be ‘in one mind’ about accepting something as true; to disbelieve is to be ‘in one mind’ about rejecting it. To doubt is to waver between the two, to believe and disbelieve all at once, and so to be ‘in two minds.’ ”
Donald Bridge, in his book When Christians Doubt, refers to doubt as “faith asking questions.” Some might think this definition elevates doubt to a position it does not deserve and masks its true nature—but not so. It is only when we understand what doubt really is that we can deal with it in the way we should. Doubt is, as Guinness puts it, “faith in two minds.”

Prayer
My God and Father, I would be at my best—at Your best. But Your best cannot get across to me if doubt remains in my heart. Show me the steps I must take to overcome doubt. Amen.

The Primary Focus
In the beginning God.—GENESIS 1:1

We focus on what is without doubt the most noble and loftiest of themes: the nature and character of God. I have noticed that Christians, generally speaking, seem to be preoccupied with knowing more about themselves rather than knowing more about God. Ask any Christian bookshop manager: “What are the best-selling books?” Not those that unfold for us the nature of God, but those that direct us toward such things as how to get a better self-image, how to manage money, how to find inner healing, how to get more excitement out of life, and so on. Not that these subjects are unimportant, but they are explored in a self-absorbed way that gives the idea that the most important thing in life is knowing ourselves better. It isn’t. The most important thing in life is knowing God better.

John Lancaster, a minister in Cardiff, South Wales, in an article entitled “Where on Earth Is God?” asks the question: “Given a choice between attending a seminar, say, on the ‘Glory of God in Isaiah’ and one on ‘The Christian and Sex,’ to which would you go?” He makes the point also that although the church often answers the questions that people are asking, the real problem may be that people are not asking the right questions. In today’s church we are far too man-centered and not God-centered.

It is not by accident, I believe, that the Bible opens with the thunderous acclaim: “In the beginning God.” I tell you with all the conviction of which I am capable: if God is not our primary focus, then everything else will soon get out of focus.

Prayer
O Father, from this day help me determine to make You my primary focus. And give me the grace and strength to maintain it, through all the fluctuations and uncertainties of the days ahead. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Happy New Year 2022: “The year of Greater Works”

“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done. And even greater works, because I am going to be with the father.”

Despite what we have been through and are currently going through it is time for the Church to do the great work that God has called us to. We must become better to do the Great work. We can no longer be silent, complacent, and live in fear. It’s time to do the work. The time is now and the place is where you stand, where you walk, where you live and where you serve.

The “great work” requires us to be totally committed to answering the call to follow Jesus and to share the Good News to the world. We must be the light that shines in darkness. The Government does not have the answer to the problems we are facing in our world it is the Church; it is the follower of Christ that is totally surrendered to God that will provide what is needed in our world. The darker the night the brighter the light.

Family, let’s do better, lets be better, as we surrender ourselves to Christ and do this Great work. I’m calling all followers of Jesus Christ to join us in the ”Greater Work”
