Special Sunday Service with Professor and Mrs. Tsukasa Takahashi

On Sunday, March 1, at 10:00 a.m., during the Sunday Service at the Jodo Mission of Hawaii, we will host a Panel Theater performance by Professor Tsukasa Takahashi, Professor Emeritus of Bukkyo University and Mrs. Sayuri Takahashi.

Panel Theater is an interactive visual storytelling method in which handmade illustrated figures and word cards are placed on and removed from a fabric-covered board (panel) to present stories and songs in an engaging way.

By combining visual elements, music, and spoken word, it helps children stay focused and actively participate—wondering, “What happens next?” or joyfully singing along with the story.

It is widely used in preschools, kindergartens, elementary schools, church and temple Sunday schools, and children’s events in both educational and religious settings. Through this medium, folktales, seasonal traditions, life lessons, and moral teachings can be shared in a gentle and accessible way.

Carrying on Japan’s rich tradition of visual storytelling—exemplified by kamishibai (paper theater)—Professor Takahashi is recognized as one of the educators who has supported expressive education in postwar early childhood practice.

We are especially grateful that Professor and Mrs. Takahashi will be offering this performance as a volunteer.

Please come and experience the warm and heart-touching world of Panel Theater, where even profound themes are conveyed with gentleness and joy. We sincerely look forward to welcoming you and your family. Here is a YouTube link featuring Professor Takahashi.
