The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world,
and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him,
to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will,
but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son,
who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1: 9-14
Throughout scripture, the coming of the Messiah became legendary. Generations of hearts ached for a prophesied King of Kings and Lord of Lords to save the chosen people from corruption, oppression, and condemnation. But instead of wealth and power, the Messiah was brought into this world in a humble state and circumstances. The King of Kings was born into poverty. The Lord of Lords was wrapped in cloth and laid in an animal trough. He was quietly raised and lived among Jews and Gentiles until it was time to teach, heal, and then be arrested, crucified, and miraculously resurrected. The true light came down from the heavens, fulfilling prophesies from Samuel, Isaiah, Daniel, and yet, there was still disbelief. How could a baby be the Messiah?
Tis the season for renewing our belief in who Jesus Christ is and why he was sent. Let us take time to be still and meditate on the glorious truth: "This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." I John 4:9-10.
This Christmas, I pray we have renewed hearts, recognizing and receiving God's love given to us through His Son, Jesus Christ. Help us remember that at his birth, the Word became flesh, and through his life, death, and resurrection, we have seen his glory. He is our King of Kings and Lord of Lords - full of grace and truth. May his light shine forevermore. Amen.
Merry Christmas to you all,
