On August 15, we celebrate the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos—Παναγία, the Mother of God and our mother in faith.

“Dormition” means “falling asleep.” The feast commemorates the peaceful repose of the Virgin Mary, the gathering of the Apostles around her, and her translation into heavenly life. Her death was not an end, but a passage into the fullness of life with her Son.

After preparing through prayer and fasting, we gather as one Church to honor the woman whose humble “yes” welcomed Christ into the world. In the Panagia, we see that a life entrusted to God is never lost; it is transformed.

As families and parishes celebrate across Greece and throughout the diaspora, may this great feast renew our connection to one another and to the faith handed down to us.

Most Holy Theotokos, save us. περαγία Θεοτόκε, σώσον ἡμᾶς.

«Δεῦτε ἅπαντα τὰ πέρατα τῆς γῆς, τὴν σεπτὴν Μετάστασιν, τῆς Θεομήτορος μακαρίσωμεν· ἐν χερσὶ γὰρ τοῦ Υἱοῦ, τὴν ψυχὴν τὴν ἄμωμον ἐναπέθετο· ὅθεν τῇ ἁγίᾳ Κοιμήσει αὐτῆς, ὁ κόσμος ἀνεζωοποιήθη, ψαλμοῖς καὶ ὕμνοις, καὶ ᾠδαῖς πνευματικαῖς, μετὰ τῶν Ἀσωμάτων, καὶ τῶν Ἀποστόλων ἑορτάζων φαιδρῶς.

The Most Holy Mother of God prays for us ceaselessly. She is always visiting us. Whenever we turn to her in our heart, she is there. After the Lord, she is the greatest protection for mankind. How many churches there are in the world that are dedicated to the Most Holy Mother of God! How many healing springs where people are cured of their ailments have sprung up in places where the Most Holy Theotokos appeared and blessed those springs to heal both the sick and the healthy! She is constantly, by our side, and all too often we forget her.
