One of the world's most beloved Catholic pilgrimage destinations has been shaken by a disturbing act of vandalism after sacred sites in Medjugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina, were targeted overnight with anti-Christian graffiti, black paint, and an apparent act of arson.

According to local authorities, police received a report at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, that a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Podbrdo (Apparition Hill) had been desecrated with black paint and offensive inscriptions. Just thirty minutes later, at around 5:00 a.m., a fire broke out on the exterior section of the altar behind Saint James Church, the spiritual heart of Medjugorje. Police immediately secured the area, and an official investigation is now underway.

Reports indicate that multiple Marian shrines across Medjugorje were targeted during the night. Additional graffiti was reportedly found on Cross Mountain (Križevac) and other pilgrimage locations.

The attack has deeply saddened pilgrims and the local Catholic community, for whom Medjugorje has become a place of prayer, conversion, and reconciliation for millions of faithful from around the world over the past four decades.

Authorities have not yet identified those responsible, and investigators are working to determine the full extent of the damage and the motive behind the coordinated acts of vandalism.
