In the beginning. God made man to live forever, without sickness, aging, or death. As sin entered the world, however, so too did pain, disease, suffering, and death. One example of the many effects of sin is Alzheimer's, a degenerative brain condition in which memory, cognitive, and eventually motor skills slowly fade. This disease not only causes suffering for the victim, but it also affects loved ones who care for the individual in decline. God did not make us to get sick, suffer, and die; instead, we were made to live with Him for eternity. That’s why He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to suffer and die for us, to defeat sin and give us eternal life with Him. This promise of eternal life that was given to us in Baptism and is confirmed again and again through God’s Word, applies to those suffering from Alzheimer’s, too. These salvific means transcend our ability to understand, comprehend, or remember and fill us with the overflowing hope and joy of Christ.
