What Road Are You On?

Road signs exist for a reason.

They tell us where we're going. They warn us about what's ahead. Sometimes they even tell us when the road we're traveling needs to end.

But a sign only helps if we're willing to pay attention to it.

Sunday's message from Romans 10:1–4 challenged us to ask a very personal question:

What road am I on?

It's easy to ask that question about everyone else.

We can see the decisions they're making. We can recognize the wrong turns in their lives. Sometimes we can clearly see where their road is leading.

It's much harder to examine our own direction.

So today, don't examine someone else's road.

Examine yours.

Where is your life headed?

What are you trusting in?

Who are you following?

And when God's Word shows you that you're headed in the wrong direction, are you willing to turn around?

Being wrong about the road doesn't mean you have to stay on it.

God's grace calls us to turn around.

And Jesus points us toward home.

Don't just keep driving because you've already come this far.

Turn around.

Follow Christ.

A Full Tank Won't Fix the Wrong Direction
Imagine preparing for a long road trip.
The tank is full.
The vehicle has been checked.
The route is mapped out.
You've packed everything you need.
You're excited about the destination.
Then you drive for five hours before realizing something:
You've been going the wrong direction.
All that preparation didn't help because the fundamental problem wasn't your effort—it was your direction.
That's the picture we saw Sunday in Romans 10.
The people Paul described had plenty of religious effort. They had zeal. They knew the law. They were working hard to establish righteousness.
But they were traveling the wrong road.
We can fall into the same trap when we begin thinking salvation depends upon what we can accomplish.
I'm a good person.
I go to church.
I help people.
I've been baptized.
I know the Bible.
I try to do what's right.
Those may be good things, but none of them can save us.
We don't need to work harder at traveling the wrong road.
We need Christ.
Salvation isn't about proving that we're good enough to reach God. It's about trusting what Jesus has already done for us.
Check your direction today.
Are you trusting in what you've done?
Or are you trusting in Christ?

Sincere, but Going the Wrong Way
Have you ever been completely convinced you were going the right direction—only to discover you were wrong?
Maybe the road looked right. The GPS seemed right. You were making great time. You had no reason to question where you were going.
But you were still going the wrong way.
Romans 10:1–4 gives us a sobering reminder that the same thing can happen spiritually.
Paul described people who had zeal for God. They weren't indifferent toward Him. They were passionate. They were religious. They were sincere.
But sincerity wasn't enough.
They were trying to establish their own righteousness instead of submitting to the righteousness that comes from God.
That's worth thinking about today.
We live in a world that often tells us, “As long as you mean well, that's what matters.” But a sincere driver can still take the wrong road. Good intentions don't change where that road leads.
The question isn't simply, “Am I sincere?”
The question is, “Am I following Christ?”
Jesus isn't one possible road among many. He is the right road.
“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” — Romans 10:4

The Fifth Gospel | The Wrong Road
Romans 10:1–4

You can be sincere and still be headed in the wrong direction.

In Romans 10, Paul describes people who had a genuine zeal for God. Their desire was real. Their religious activity was real. Their determination was real.

But they were still on the wrong road.

They were trying to establish their own righteousness instead of submitting to the righteousness of God. And no amount of sincerity, effort, religion, or good intentions can make the wrong road lead to the right destination.

Think about taking a road trip. You can have a full tank of gas, a detailed map, plenty of determination, and a strong desire to reach your destination. You can drive for hours and feel great about your progress—but if you're traveling in the wrong direction, all that effort is only taking you farther away.

The same is true spiritually.

We cannot choose our own road to salvation. We cannot earn our way there. We cannot substitute religious activity, good works, or our own righteousness for God's plan.

The right road is Christ.

Romans 10:4 reminds us that Christ is the fulfillment of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

Maybe today you need to ask a simple question:

Am I on the right road?

Turn around. Stop trying to make your own way. Trust in Christ and follow Him.

The Anchor Holds

Sometimes following Christ doesn’t mean the storm immediately disappears.

The waves may still rise.
The wind may still blow.
The fear may still be real.

But the Anchor holds.

Our confidence isn't ultimately found in how strong our faith feels. Our confidence is found in the One in whom our faith rests.

Jesus is steady when everything around us isn't.

Whatever you're facing today, remember:

You don't have to be strong enough to hold everything together. Trust the One who holds you.

Jesus Is the Rock

Paul describes Jesus as a stone.

For some, He becomes the stone they stumble over. For those who believe, He becomes the Rock upon which they stand.

God’s graciousness is seen not only in offering salvation but in providing the very means of our salvation: Jesus Christ Himself.

Our foundation isn’t our accomplishments.

It isn’t our goodness.

It isn’t even how strong we feel today.

Our foundation is Christ.

Build your life on the Rock.

God Provides the Way

Imagine standing at the edge of a canyon trying desperately to reach the other side.

You jump. You build. You try harder.

But the gap remains.

Then you discover that someone has already built the bridge.

That is a picture of grace.

Our works cannot bridge the gap between us and a holy God. But God did not leave us stranded.

He provided the way.

We don't cross because we tried hard enough. We cross because Jesus did for us what we could never do ourselves.

Not by works.
By grace.
Through faith.

Faith Receives What Works Cannot

Israel pursued righteousness through the Law, yet Paul tells us they stumbled because they pursued it through works rather than faith.

The Gentiles, meanwhile, received righteousness through faith.

That difference still matters.

Following Jesus isn’t about finally becoming good enough for God. It is trusting that Jesus has already done what we could never do for ourselves.

Faith trusts.
Grace provides.

Instead of asking, “Have I done enough?” perhaps today we should ask, “Am I trusting Christ?”
