Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry has released a statement on the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

“As the ELCA, we must speak plainly: violence rooted in hatred is sin. We condemn Islamophobia and acknowledge its rise in recent years. Our church affirms that “anti-Muslim hatred is antithetical to our Christian faith” (A Declaration of the ELCA to the Muslim Community), for we are called to love our neighbor in ways that cast out fear (1 John 4:18).”

As we continue to hold our own communities in prayer amid recent flooding, we also lift up our companion synod in Papua New Guinea, where Cyclone Maila has caused significant flooding and disruption.

We are reminded that we are part of a global church, bound together in care and compassion. We pray for the safety of all those affected, for those who have been displaced, and for the communities working to respond and rebuild.

Please join us in praying for our siblings in Papua New Guinea.

This week's storms brought heavy rain, flooding concerns, and the threat of tornadoes across parts of Michigan. As it continues to rain, we’re continuing to hold all of our communities in prayer, especially those who are experiencing flooding. 💙

If you, your congregation or community have been impacted, please reach out. The synod has resources available.

We’d also love to hear how you’re doing. Feel free to share updates (or prayer requests) in the comments or send us a message.

You are not alone. We are here for you. Peace be with you all.

We are holding the people of Cheboygan close in prayer as the dam nears a critical point and some prepare for possible evacuation. In this time of uncertainty, we remember that we are bound together in Christ’s love and care.

Gracious God,

Be with your people in Cheboygan. Calm anxious hearts, protect those in danger, and guide those working to keep the community safe. Grant peace in the unknown and strength for what lies ahead. Hold them in your mercy and surround them with your love.

Amen.
