Holy and merciful God, please give me eyes to see, a heart willing to serve, and hands ready to help the people in my path that need a burden lifted. I pray this in Jesus' name, to honor him. Amen.

Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
—Galatians 6:2

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
This is another way of saying, "Love your neighbor as yourself," or "Love your brother and sister in Christ as yourself." Jesus came to bear our burdens and carry away the stain and pain of our sin. (Read Isaiah 53 for a powerful description of God's Suffering Servant, a passage quoted in the New Testament in reference to Jesus.) He now asks us to live redemptively, in practical ways, toward those around us. More than just praying or asking what we can do to help, we are called to serve, minister, and assist others who are burdened. Let's carry each other's burdens and in this way live into the character and compassion of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Today's Prayer...
“Holy and merciful God, please give me eyes to see, a heart willing to serve, and hands ready to help the people in my path that need a burden lifted. I pray this in Jesus' name, to honor him. Amen.”

Father, thank you for your incomparably generous grace lavished upon me through Jesus' death on the Cross and the salvation I have received through him. Please make my own sin abhorrent to me. Please give me a passion for holiness and a deeper appreciation of what it cost you to make me holy. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?
—Romans 6:1-2

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Grace doesn't mean that we are sloppy with our sins. We have died to sin when we surrendered our lives to the Lordship of Christ. We don't want sin, or its power, to have control over us. We don't want to take lightly the awful cost Jesus paid to cover our sin. The apostle Paul uses the strongest language possible ("By no means!" is way too tame a translation: "God forbid!" "Unthinkable!" "Abomination!" would all be much more accurate.) As those saved by grace, we realize that sin is more than breaking a divine command. Sin is making light of Jesus' love for us by choosing our sin over his sacrifice. Ouch! That is a startling revelation. Sin is rebelling against the Father who paid such a high price to adopt us into his family. Sin is breaking our Father's heart because we are choosing our sin over our love for him. Finally, sin is choosing our own will rather than God's will; a choice that leads us down a path of self-destruction.

Today's Prayer...
“Father, thank you for your incomparably generous grace lavished upon me through Jesus' death on the Cross and the salvation I have received through him. Please make my own sin abhorrent to me. Please give me a passion for holiness and a deeper appreciation of what it cost you to make me holy. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.”

O Lord, I look forward to the day Christ comes in victory to bring me home to you. Until that day, please use me in your service to bring others to faith in Jesus and share in his future. I want to be a living testimony to Jesus and his powerful grace. I am thankful that no matter what you have in store for me. I am confident you have joined my future to your victorious Son and my Savior. I pray in his name, with great expectation and hope. Amen.

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
—Philippians 1:21

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
The ultimate question in each of our lives is simply this: Do we have something to live for that is also worth dying for? As Paul faced possible death in prison, his answer was "Yes!" He could boldly and honestly say, "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." Christ was his answer, reason for living, and hope beyond death. Our faith should lead us to say something similar or we don't have a hope that won't perish, spoil, or fade kept for us in heaven (1 Peter 1:4). Please, dear friend in Jesus, I am praying that you and I can celebrate together in the presence of our Lord Jesus when we are made like him as we see him as he genuinely is in glory (1 John 3:1-3; Colossians 3:1-4).

Today's Prayer...
“O Lord, I look forward to the day Christ comes in victory to bring me home to you. Amen.”

Father, I have been blessed in so many ways. Thank you! Dear Father, I do have some family and friends who carry heavy burdens. I love them, and I ask you to help me be a blessing to them as you work in their lives to lift their burdens. Please strengthen them, lift their burdens from them, heal what is broken, and strengthen their faith. Thank you, Father, for listening to my requests for these friends and loved ones weighed down by the burdens of life. They need to know that you care for them and will lift these burdens from them. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
—1 Peter 5:6-7

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
You may have had a similar experience to this one. A friend asks you how you're doing. At first, that friend seems interested in your answer. As you begin to share the burdens of your heart, you realize they aren't listening and don't appear to be interested in your answer. They're just being polite. Most people have so many burdens that they don't know what to do with any more. However, our heavenly Father reminds us to cast all our anxieties on him because he will sustain us (1 Peter 5:7). We can share our cares on the Lord because he will sustain us (Psalm 55:22). We can joyously praise our Savior because he daily bears our burdens (Psalm 68:19).

Today's Prayer...
“Father, I have been blessed in so many ways. Amen.”
