SUNDAY SCRIPTURE PREVIEW

Tomorrow we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. As we prepare tonight in the silence, in the waiting. As we prepare for everything that is to happen tomorrow, let us take a few moments in the silence and quiet of the night before to reflect on exactly what Jesus did on the cross.

Romans 6:9-11 NRSVUE
[9] We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. [10] The death he died, he died to sin once for all, but the life he lives, he lives to God. [11] So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

In that act of humble submission to the will of God, Jesus freed us from sin forever. That is what we celebrate, and what a joy we should have in that celebration!

1 Peter 1:3-4 NRSVUE
[3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead [4] and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,

GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE:

Tonight, at 7pm, Covenant Church of Holden has our Good Friday service. As we prepare to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on Sunday, we spend today remembering the act of humble submission Jesus made upon the cross. Today marks the day where our sins, the sins of all mankind, we're laid upon Jesus shoulders as he bore them all so we could give them to Him. Mercy and grace has no great example than Christ sacrificing himself for us, even when we are unworhty if it. Join us tonight in worship of the Sacrificial King.

1 Peter 2:24 NRSVUE
[24] He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE PREVIEW

TLDR:
We give praise to the One King who came in peace and gave us eternal victory.

Psalms 98:4 NRSVUE
[4] Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises.

We celebrate Sunday as Palm Sunday. A day where Jesus enters Jerusalem for the final time, and he enters as a king… riding a donkey. This is in fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9. We see the crowd in the midst of their celebrations, throwing down their cloaks and palm branches, cheering Jesus as He enters the city.

The choice of a donkey is also not just a coincidence. It shows the humility of the savior. This man, Jesus, had been performing miracles and undoubtedly was rumored about in the land. The crowd was ready for a new king with the repression of the Roman government at the time. Jesus, riding lowly on the donkey, was signaling that He was coming in peace.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy week as well. This is a Sunday where we can take time to reflect on what this week had in store for Jesus. To prepare our hearts for the sacrifices of Good Friday and the joy of Resurrection Sunday.

As we celebrate this day, let us remember the peace, mercy, hope, and joy given bonus through the acts of Jesus.

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE PREVIEW:

TLDR: Don't let anything, or anyone, come between you seeking Christ.

This week we are looking at the story of the blind beggar being healed by Jesus on His way to Jerusalem before Palm Sunday. When I read through this story it Mark 10:46-52, verses 47 and 48 stood out to me, along with Jesus's response.

[47] When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” [48] Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

This man was desperate. He had lost his sight and everything he had was dependent on others giving alms as he begged. He knew what it meant to have sight, and he knew that the one going through town had performed miracles. This was his chance to be healed. He was crying out with everything he had, to be restored.

So what happened next? Those around him rebuked him. Told him to be quiet, to have some respect, he was embarrassing them and himself. The blind man persisted, not allowing those that would come between him and the Messiah to keep him silent. He didn't bash them, call them out for trying to stop them, but he kept his focus calling out for Jesus.

So what did Jesus do? Did He tell the blind man to be quiet and have some respect? Did He rebuke the others for obstructing the man? He simply called the blind man over and had a conversation with him. Asking the blind man what He could do for him and the blind man submitting to Jesus.

[52] Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.

Many times our own doubt, our individual desires, the people we surround ourselves with can lead us away or distract us from seeking Christ. What is it that is blinding you from Him today? How can you turn your eyes to Him?

TLDR: We are no longer defined by who we were, but who we are in Christ!

Something New

The last couple of weeks we've talked about putting God's will above our own and doing it even though it's hard. Tagging in that we are to worship in any and all circumstances. That seems, and is, a lot! Especially when we look at who we are… or should I say were.

We came to Christ as sinners. All of us. We have all fallen short and have our own shame and hangups. So, how can a sinner, unworthy person like me ever hope to be able to do all of those things we talk about? We are not who we were, but we are made new in Christ!

Colossians 3:9-11 tells us that we are no longer our old selves. We are something new that is, “renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator.” Not only that but we are no longer to identify with who we used to be, but to become a family in Christ!

TLDR: We are called to worship in all circumstances. When life is “good”, “bad”, or “whatever”, pray and praise His name.

Worship When It's Hard

Last week we looked at being doers of the word and how difficult that can be, even in the best of times. This week we keep in that same vein and look at worshipping even when times are hard, even when the world seems staked against us, even when we are struggling with doubt and disbelief.

In Acts 16:23-25, we see where Paul and Silas were imprisoned and shackled, yet even in a position where most of us would despair, question why it was happening to us, or even give up, they sang and gave praises to God. Even in prison and in the midst of uncertainty, they knew they could lean on God and were giving Him praises in all circumstances.

So we ask, what situation to we find ourselves in? Are we on the mountain top, are we walking the valley, or are we just existing? Wherever we find ourselves, whatever our situation, are we praying and praising God? 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NRSVUE
[16] Rejoice always, [17] pray without ceasing, [18] give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

TLDR: Following Jesus, putting His will above your own is hard. Put in the work to do His will.

Just Do It

This week the set title is “Just Do It”. The title doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, but it is a way to remind us what the set was about in a few short words. Of course this title is a nod to the famous Nike slogan. Despite the slogan's odd origins, it was meant to and has inspired generations of athletes to reach for the goals and strive to do their best even in the face of adversity or when things were hard.

So, what does this have to do with worship and following Jesus? Worshipping God is putting Him above all other things in your life. It is putting off your own desires and seeking His will above your own. As James says, “be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger… rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save.”

This can be so easy to say, to preach, to ask of others, but man oh man can it be hard to do. As with most things in life, the best things are often the hardest to do. Whether it is getting in shape, getting a degree, opening a business, having kids, all of these things take dedication and work. How much more should be working to know Christ, to be imitators of Him, and to do His will. To quote James again, “But be doers of the word and not merely hearers.” So, when you are struggling in your faithwalk, when doubt seeps in, don't be discouraged or afraid of it. Dig in, work for the answers and lean on Christ. Do the work. Just Do It!

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE PREVIEW:

This week, for worship, we are looking at John 4:24 and Galatians 5:25. In these scriptures we see that God is spirit and that we are called to worship and be guided by Him in spirit. To set apart our fleshly desires for what the Spirit calls us to. To set aside what the world tells us to desire and be guided by the Spirit to set our focus.

In knowing God, in growth as disciples of Jesus, we must not only focus on what we are being told or what we read, but we must rely on the Spirit to guide us in a path discernment.

As we get closer to Sunday, we ask that we all pray for our congregation. Pray that as we gather, we are open to receiving the Spirit, open to moving as He moves, and our hearts and minds are open to His message and what He will reveal to us this week.

May God bless you all!
