Peaceful Pachyderms
A killer is on the loose in the Kolhan and Chaibasa forest areas in northeastern India. Thus far it is believed he has killed some twenty people. He usually strikes at night. His weapon of choice is his feet. The killer enters small villages and tramples people to death. Residents in the area have been warned to stay indoors at night. At last report officials have been unsuccessful in tracking him down. It is said that the killer is capable of covering up to twenty miles per night even in thickly forested areas. The killer is a young male wild elephant. Officials aren’t certain why the pachyderm has turned violent. One theory is that the elephant has been separated from its herd and is taking its anger and frustration out on people.
When God created the first man, Adam, and placed him in the Garden of Eden, did he, Adam, have to be concerned about rampaging pachyderms such as elephants? No he did not! All of creation was at peace. There was complete harmony in the animal kingdom and between Adam and all of the animals created by God. We know this to be so because “God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good” (Genesis 1:31).
All of that changed when sin entered into the human race through Adam. As a result sickness and disease and destruction and violence and death became commonplace in the world of men and animals. Harmony and peace were lost. God took care of the sin problem by sending His Son into the world to die for the sins of mankind. Now whosoever believes in Jesus Christ receives forgiveness of sins and has eternal life. And someday God will see to it that, once again, there will be harmony and peace in the kingdom of men and the animal kingdom. He will do this by sending His Son into the world to establish His kingdom on earth. “With righteousness He shall judge the world” (Ps. 98:9).
