Peaceful Pachyderms

A killer is on the loose in the Kolhan and Chaibasa forest areas in northeastern India. Thus far it is believed he has killed some twenty people. He usually strikes at night. His weapon of choice is his feet. The killer enters small villages and tramples people to death. Residents in the area have been warned to stay indoors at night. At last report officials have been unsuccessful in tracking him down. It is said that the killer is capable of covering up to twenty miles per night even in thickly forested areas. The killer is a young male wild elephant. Officials aren’t certain why the pachyderm has turned violent. One theory is that the elephant has been separated from its herd and is taking its anger and frustration out on people.

When God created the first man, Adam, and placed him in the Garden of Eden, did he, Adam, have to be concerned about rampaging pachyderms such as elephants? No he did not! All of creation was at peace. There was complete harmony in the animal kingdom and between Adam and all of the animals created by God. We know this to be so because “God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good” (Genesis 1:31).

All of that changed when sin entered into the human race through Adam. As a result sickness and disease and destruction and violence and death became commonplace in the world of men and animals. Harmony and peace were lost. God took care of the sin problem by sending His Son into the world to die for the sins of mankind. Now whosoever believes in Jesus Christ receives forgiveness of sins and has eternal life. And someday God will see to it that, once again, there will be harmony and peace in the kingdom of men and the animal kingdom. He will do this by sending His Son into the world to establish His kingdom on earth. “With righteousness He shall judge the world” (Ps. 98:9).

Seeking Shelter

Imagine you are driving across the great state of Kansas on the interstate. The weather is not looking good. Thick, dark clouds are building up all around you. You hear rumblings of thunder and see lightning flashes. It begins to rain. You have the radio on so that you can listen to the weather report. Then comes the dreaded announcement that a tornado has been spotted and everybody in its path needs to take shelter immediately. You realize that you could very well be in the tornado’s path. What do you do? You know that you need to find shelter. As you look around you spot an overpass a short distance ahead. You reach the overpass and pull off to the side of the road. You breathe a deep sigh of relief snd say to yourself, “Now I’m safe.” But are you? Not according to the National Weather Service. According to the NWS, “In reality, an overpass may be one of the worst places to seek shelter from a tornado. Seeking shelter under an overpass puts you at greater risk of being killed or seriously injured by flying debris from the powerful tornadic winds … In addition to the debris that can injure you, the winds under an overpass are channeled and could easily blow you or carry you out from under the overpass and throw you hundreds of yards.” How ironic! You think you are in a safe place but it could possibly be a death trap.

In Matthew 7:21-23 Jesus made mention of certain people who also thought they were in a place of safety from the coming day of God’s judgment. “On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’” Only by trusting in Jesus Christ to save you will you be in the one and only place of safety.

A Saving Look

Every year somewhere between 81,000 to 138,000 people die as the result of being bitten by a snake. A German tourist vacationing with his family in Egypt was recently bitten by a snake. He was taken to a hospital where he received treatment. But the poison injected into his system by the snake proved to be fatal.

In Numbers 21 we read of another snake biting incident. Not just one but many people being bitten by poisonous snakes. Having come out of Egypt, Moses and the people of Israel were on their way to the land of Canaan. As they were inclined to do the people began complaining about the conditions in which they found themselves. As a result “the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died” (Numbers 21:6). Moses interceded on behalf of the people and God told him; “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” If a person bitten by a snake was willing to lift up his eyes and look on the bronze serpent he would live. It was a look of faith, the snake bitten person believing the remedy provided by God would save him. And so it was for all who believed God and looked. “If a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live” (Numbers 21:9).

Many years later, Jesus Christ, in a conversation with a man by the name of Nicodemus, referenced the bronze serpent incident. He said; as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life” (John 3:14-15). Jesus was lifted up on a Roman cross. He died for our sins, was buried and rose again the third day. Now whoever believes in Him will receive forgiveness of his sins and have eternal life.

Not Alone

It is called ‘alpine divorce’. According to a CNN news article “the term is used to describe an event during a hike or other outdoor adventure, when one partner, usually male, abandons the other, who is typically less experienced and more vulnerable, in a remote and potentially dangerous setting.” In the mind’s eye of some ‘alpine divorce’ provides a simple solution for ending a relationship. A man known as Thomas P. hit upon this solution. He invited his girlfriend to go mountain climbing. Together they climbed the highest mountain in Austria. Having reached the summit he, then, proceeded to abandon her. Left alone the woman did not survive the ordeal. She was found frozen to death. The man later claimed that he left her behind in order to find help.

Being abandoned for whatever reason has to be one of the most difficult experiences a person can go through. This would be true even if the one who experiences abandonment is able to survive and go on with life. The Apostle Paul experienced firsthand what it was like to be left alone. In his letter of 2 Timothy Paul tells Timothy: “At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me” (2 Timothy 4:16). It must have been difficult for Paul to write those words as they would have brought back painful memories. But he then goes on to say, “the Lord stood by me and strengthened me” (2 Timothy 4:17).

Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, has promised that He will never leave nor forsake His own. He has kept that promise down through the ages and He will continue to keep it. If you belong to Christ take heart and be encouraged. You are not alone. If you do not know Him that can change in a moment of time. Jesus who died for your sins was buried and rose again the third day is waiting for you to trust in Him to save you and be with you forever.

Blessed Assurance

How much would you be willing to pay for a life jacket? Recently a life jacket sold for close to a million dollars! Did the person who bought it need it? No, the buyer was not in any danger. It was something he wanted and he was willing to pay a huge sum of money to get it. The life jacket was an ordinary one for its day but it had an extraordinary history. It had been worn by one of the survivors of the Titanic.

Like the passengers on the Titanic, the Apostle Paul also found himself on a sinking ship. The ship with its crew and passengers, including Paul, was bound for Rome. But a powerful and destructive storm prevented the ship and those on board from reaching their destination. As the storm continued to rage it seemed evident that the ship would sink and all on board would be lost. Did Paul have a life jacket? No he did not. Nor did any of the other passengers and crew members. As the ship was breaking up near the island of Malta the Roman commander “ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and make for the land, and the rest on planks or on pieces of the ship” (Acts 27:43-44).

During the storm while the ship was afloat God had promised Paul that he and the rest of the passengers as well as the crew members would survive. And they did! “And so it was that all were brought safely to land” (Acts 27:44). But what if God had not intervened? Perhaps most if not all - including Paul - would have drowned. But even if that had happened Paul would have made it safely home. Having trusted in Jesus Christ to save him from his sin Paul had the assurance of being at home in heaven whenever death came. How good it is to know that nothing is able to separate a child of God from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

An Offer for You

Would you turn down a $26 million offer? Ida Huddleston did. A company offered her $26 million to part with several acres of her 1,200-acre farm. The offer was legitimate. The money was hers for the taking. Why, then, did she turn down the offer? She gave this explanation. "What I've got here, I want to pass it down. What God told me to do was to keep it until I was through with it and then pass it on to the next generation.”

How about an offer to be ruler of the world? Would you turn that offer down? Jesus did. According to Matthew 4:8-9, “the devil took him (Jesus) to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Matthew goes on to record In Matthew 4:10 that Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,“ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ”

Was the devil’s offer a legitimate one? It would appear to be so. The Bible makes it clear that the devil is the god this world. Why, then, did Jesus turn down the devil’s offer? We know from Psalm 2 and other Scriptures that it is the will of God the Father to have His Son rule over the nations of the world. But first there had to be the cross. The devil was seeking to short circuit God’s plan and will to have His Son die on a Roman cross for mankind’s sins. Jesus was willing to wait for His Father’s time and will even though it meant death awaited Him.

Aren’t you glad and thankful that Jesus turned down the devil’s offer? Salvation full and free is now available to all who trust in the crucified, risen Savior to save them from their sins. He offers eternal life to all who come to Him.

Men On the Moon

You have heard of the man in the moon. But what about men on the moon? Within a decade we could have men on the moon. NASA recently announced plans to build a permanent base on the moon’s surface. It will take some seven years to complete and cost in the neighborhood of $20 billion. The old jazz song "Fly Me to the Moon”, could become a reality some day. At least that is the hope and vision of some.
But before NASA officials get too excited and spend too much money on their proposed project they might should consider what Revelation 21:23 says. “And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.” The moon as well as the sun will one day be obsolete. They will not be needed. The glory of God the Father and God the Son (the Lamb) will provide all the light that is needed to light the city. The city is New Jerusalem - the eternal dwelling place of God’s people. And, again, we are told in Revelation 22:5. “And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.”
When it comes to living on the moon or living in the eternal city of God I prefer the latter. And so did Abraham. According to Hebrews 11:10 “he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.” I trust you also are looking forward to this city. It awaits all who trust in Jesus Christ to save them. “Christ died for your sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).

Finding the Lamb

“Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” This was the question Isaac asked of his father Abraham. What Isaac didn’t know at that point in time is that earlier God in testing Abraham had said to him, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you” (Genesis 22:2). There was no lamb to be found because Isaac was to be the offering! What, then, did Abraham say in response to his son’s question concerning the lamb? Wisely he said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son” (Genesis 22:8). And God did! As Abraham was about to offer Isaac, “he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son” (Genesis 22:13). God provided a substitute sacrifice.

Many years later John the Baptist “saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’ Once again, God provided a substitute sacrifice to take away our sin. The substitute was the Lamb of God - God’s very own Son. The Son of God died in our place and thus paid the debt for sin that you and I could never have paid. Not in a thousand years. Not ever. It took the death of God’s beloved Son to cancel the debt we owed as lost and hell-bound sinners.
Now all who trust in the crucified, risen Savior to save them can answer Isaac’s question, “Where is the Lamb?” by saying, “the Lamb of God who took away my sin lives in me.” Have you found the Lamb? Have you asked Him to take away your sin?

Living Longer

Recently I saw a TV ad promoting a new drug. The ad listed several possible benefits the drug offered including “the chance to live longer.” I would think that most people would want to live longer. Any drug, then, that gives people a chance to live longer would it seems be well received.

Isaiah 38 presents the account of a king who wanted to live longer. The king’s name was Hezekiah and he ruled over the southern kingdom of Judah. According to Isaiah 38:1 “Hezekiah was sick and near death.” Through the prophet Isaiah God told Hezekiah “to set his house in order, for you shall die and not live” (Isaiah 38:1). But the king was not ready to die. He wanted to live longer. “Please, O Lord,” the king prayed, “remember how I have walked before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and have done what is good in your sight” (Isaiah 38:3). “I have heard your prayer,” God said through Isaiah, “I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life” (Isaiah 38:4-5). What an answer to prayer!

If a person is near death, as Hezekiah was, he may ask God to extend his life. And God may choose to do so. But then, again, God may not. However, a person can ask God to live forever with Him in heaven and God will grant him his request. That is, God will grant his request if he trusts in God’s Son to save him. “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us” (1 John 5:13-14). Do you want to have eternal life and live forever in the presence of God? Then ask the Son of God to save you.

Free Agents

It is free agency time in the National Football League. The players who are free agents have the opportunity to sign with any team they choose. And most will, in all likelihood, choose to play for the team that pays them the most money. Loyalty to a particular team is by and large a thing of the past. Players who stay with the same team throughout their entire career are few and far between. Apparently they don’t feel that they owe anything to their former team. In many cases money trumps loyalty.

Becoming a free agent is not restricted to the world of sports. A person who trusts in Jesus Christ to save him from his sin also becomes a free agent, in a manner of speaking. He is set free from the penalty and power of sin. As Jesus Himself said, “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). Before the Son sets a person free he is a slave to sin. He is in the slave market of sin with no way to escape. But Christ is able to redeem a person from the slave market of sin. He makes this possible because He paid the price of redemption through His substitutionary death on the cross. “The wages or penalty of sin is death” (Romans 3:23). But God has accepted the payment of His Son and stamps “Paid in Full,” on the debt of sin to all who trust in Jesus Christ to save them. This is why the Apostle Peter said to his readers in 1 Peter 1:18-19 “you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”

If you have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb than you are free. Free to live for the One who set you free. If you are not free, why wait any longer?
