“For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for the good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” - Romans 5:7-8

The ultimate act of heroism is when a person gives his or her life for another person’s life, especially friends, comrades, or family. Michael Monsoor was a Navy SEAL fighting in the Iraqi War. One day while in battle, a gr***de literally hit him on the chest and fell at his feet. In a split-second decision, he threw himself onto that gr***de, saving the lives of his fellow Navy SEALs.

His lieutenant, one of the men who were saved, had this to say about Michael: “He never took his eye off the gr***de. His only movement was down towards it. He undoubtedly saved mine and the other SEAL’s lives, and we owe him.” Michel’s actions were awarded our nation’s highest honor, the Medal of Honor. What bravery, courage, and love that must have taken for this soldier to give his own life for that of his friends.

It’s one thing to die for your friends, your buddies, or your family members, but Christ died for those who were killing Him, who murdered Him. Christ died for those who were not with Him. He died for all of us! It was our sin that killed Him.
Yet, sadly, most people in American culture think, “If I can be good enough, then that will make me a Christian.”

Romans 5:8, however, disputes this claim. The fact is, that while we are sinners, while we are ungodly and helpless in overcoming our sinfulness, Christ died for our sins. So, it’s not a matter of getting your life good enough and then bam, you’re a Christian. No, instead the question is are you willing to accept what Christ has done for you — will you accept this gift of love that Christ died, paying the penalty for your sins?

Jesus laid down His life, not just for His friends, but for all of us who nailed Him to the cross. And that is the ultimate act of heroism.

“And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.” - Matthew 5:41

Which business model do you prefer? One that provides the bare minimum in terms of service and quality? Or do you prefer one that offers a little something extra, over-the-top service with a quality product?

We all love when a company goes above and beyond what’s expected – when they go the extra mile. Why? Because when it’s not required or expected, it shows that the company values their customer, which often creates loyal customers.

When Jesus spoke about going the extra mile, He wasn’t referring to customer service but to a Roman law imposed on the people. The law stated that Roman soldiers could order any citizen to carry their weapons or equipment for a distance of up to one mile. No matter what you were doing, the law required that you drop everything and obey. You can imagine how the people felt about that! So when Jesus said, “Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two,” they weren’t exactly thrilled.

In today’s context, it would be comparable to having a very demanding boss who expects so much from you that at times it seems unreasonable. Yet you do even more than he or she expects, even if it goes unacknowledged.

What Jesus was saying to Christians is this: “Even if your superiors are incredibly difficult, don’t just do the bare minimum. Go above and beyond – exceed their expectations.” But be careful to watch your motives. Don’t act in this way because you’re expecting a raise or hoping to be promoted; do it because you want to be a positive witness for Christ. Do it for the glory of God!

If you want to communicate a character and a lifestyle that is beyond the norm; if you want to be a positive witness for Christ – then ask yourself if you’re willing to do more than is expected of you. Go the extra mile. The world is always surprised when people do.

Do you ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bibles like we treat our cell phones?

What if we…
Carried it with us everywhere?
Turned back to get it if we forgot it?
Checked it for messages throughout the day?
Used it in case of emergencies?
Spent an hour or more a day using it?

What would our lives look like?

Hebrews 4:12 tells us that: “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

And unlike our cell phone, we don’t have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill.

This isn’t a knock on cell phones, but rather a reminder to spend time with the most important item in our possession. Our Bibles are a precious gift from God (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Let’s treasure them!
