Finding the Kingdom: Lesson Six
Acts Chapter 2 tells of the beginning of the Kingdom which John and Jesus have both said was “near“ when they started their ministry. A short three years later there were about 3,000 added to the Kingdom one day. They were added by the Lord, after receiving the “word“ from Peter, then submitting to being immersed for the remission of their sins. (Acts 2:37–47) Peter’s command to “repent, and be baptized for the forgiveness of their sins“ was not his idea or just his opinion. It was given to him by the Holy Spirit, as Jesus had promised. The plan had already been “bound in Heaven“ as Jesus said in Matthew 16:19. And it is still bound in heaven today, as are all the other aspects of the church.
Beginning in Acts 2, and continuing through the New Testament, the pattern for the church is given. Not only the plan of salvation, but the elements of worship, organization, and the leadership system are all given and are permanent. Read Galatians 1:6–9, where some were wanting to teach something “different.“ But Paul, the apostle of Christ, said anyone preaching a different gospel is to be accursed. So, we want to follow the New Testament pattern to be pleasing to our Lord, who told the apostles that their teachings were already bound in Heaven. In Matthew 15:9, Jesus said that teaching the doctrines and precepts of men is vanity. Titus 1:9 says we are to exhort in sound doctrine, and refuse those who contradict.
The original language for the New Testament is Greek, where the word for baptism clearly means immerse or dip, but men have changed that to what they want, and some have removed it from the plan of salvation. This is contrary to the scriptural truth. In John 2:3–5, Jesus says we must be born of water and the spirit to be able to enter into the Kingdom. Romans 6 explains this process of death, burial, and being born into newness of life.
