March 18 celebrates Cyril of Jerusalem, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. Cyril was born in 315 and was raised in Jerusalem. Cyril was consecrated as a priest and given the primary task of catechizing in the city. Much of his life was spent battling the A***n heresy, which had taken firm root and denied the divinity of Jesus, and almost toppled the Church in the fourth century. Cyril was himself accused of being a supporter of the heresy, even being called such by Saint Jerome, until he was ultimately vindicated in 1822, when he was declared a Doctor of the Church. (Boy, that took a while!) Cyril was an active participant at the Council of Constantinople, where an amended form of the Nicene Creed was promulgated.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

In addition to the celebrations, take a moment to reflect on the holy aspect of Patrick, who was both poor and a captive as a youth and then devoted most of his adult life to service and the Gospels. A lot of myth and legend surrounds Patrick and many concrete details of his life are unknown, but what is very evident is the long-lasting legacy of his work, shown in the deep Catholic roots that took hold in Ireland.

February 6 is the Memorial for Saint Paul Miki and his companions. Brother Paul Miki was a Jesuit and native of Japan. He was martyred in 1597, along with 26 others, on what is now known as the Holy Mountain overlooking Nagasaki, Japan. Missionaries were few and far between in Japan thereafter and it wasn't until the 1860s that any missionary presence of note was back in Japan. When they arrived, there were few signs of Christianity. However, as they got to know the community around Nagasaki, they found thousands of Christians, the result of those early martyrs' efforts. Saint Paul and his companions were beautified in 1627 and canonized in 1862.

January 31 is the Memorial for Saint John Bosco. One of the pioneers of Catholic education, St. John was ordained a priest in 1841. After working as a chaplain in a hospice for working girls, he opened the Oratory of St. Francis de Sales for boys. That institution provided workshops teaching shoe making and tailoring so that the boys could develop a profession. The institution quickly expanded and St. John's preaching skills continued to gain renown. In 1859, he founded the Salesian order with the encouragement of Pope Pius IX. John Bosco died in Turin, Italy in 1888.
