A Time to Remember - September 11, 2026

I choose to send greetings on this day with the hope of unifying our hearts in remembrance. As our lives continue to unfold, each of us carries our own way of remembering September 11. After twenty‑five years, I still recall the weather with vivid clarity — a brilliant blue‑skied fall morning across the Northeast, a day that began with routine and normalcy, unaware of the devastation that would unfold in the hours ahead.

As age and experience allow, we hold memories shaped by that day — some deeply personal, all connected to the evil and tragic reality of terrorism. The events of September 11 sharpened our perspective: death, injury, heroism, and destruction converged, and our nation stepped courageously into an unknown future.

My belief, and my invitation to all of us, is that we dare not pass by this date without remembering. We honor the best of humanity’s response, even as we acknowledge the vulnerability that can surface at any moment.

My reflections lead me again to an axiom of life I have shared before:

If we are prepared to die,
we are then free to live.

I will not attempt to fully explain this expression today. Instead, I simply point us toward an ancient prayer that, to me, reflects light and truth:

The Dakota Prayer
(modern attribution)

Teach us to walk the soft earth
as relatives to all that live.
Help us to live each day so that
we are not afraid of dying.

I offer these thoughts as food for reflection — perhaps even a conversation starter — encouraging each of us to continue to remember and reflect on what this day means in our own lives.

Prayerfully with love,
Gary

Welcome
Prelude – We Will Extol You, Matthew, flute
Unison Call to Worship – Psalm 26:8-12

Lord, I love the house where you live,
the place where your glory dwells.
Do not take away my soul along with sinners,
my life with those who are bloodthirsty,
in whose hands are wicked schemes,
whose right hands are full of bribes.
I lead a blameless life;
deliver me and be merciful to me.
My feet stand on level ground; in the great
congregation I will praise the Lord.

Gary’s Tribute to Dolly Parton
In listening to the wide range of tributes offered in recent days — each reflecting the breadth of her remarkable life — one word continues to rise to the surface for me: light.

Light embodies truth, love, generosity, grace, acceptance, and action. True light is lived; it presses back darkness simply by being what it is. Darkness, ultimately, is not a force in itself — it is what fills the void where light is absent.

Dolly Parton lived as light. She offered it freely, consistently, and without pretense.

May each of us strive to be light in our own spheres of influence, inspired by Dolly’s life of light.

Matthew Pelletier, Flute

Call to Worship – Psalm 138:1, 5-8 (adapted)

Leader: We give you thanks, O LORD,
with our whole hearts.

People: We sing of the ways of the LORD,
for great is the glory of the LORD.

Leader: For though the LORD is high,
he regards the lowly, but the haughty
he perceives from far away.

People: Though we walk in the midst of trouble,
your right hand delivers us.

All: The LORD will fulfill his purpose for us;
your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever.
Do not forsake the work of your hands.

Prelude – Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven
Unison Call to Worship – 1 Peter 3:13-15, Judy, leader
Who is going to harm you if you are eager to
do good? But even if you should suffer for what
is right, you are blessed.
“Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.”
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord.
Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone
who asks you to give the reason for the hope that
you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.
