Madonna Della Luce - Hingham Italians who immigrated to this country from Palermiti Celebrate the Madonna Della Luce (Mother of the Light)

Every year there’s a feast of The Madonna of Light in Hingham. People that immigrated to this country from this little town in Italy, Palermiti, gather here in Hingham every year to celebrate the Madonna della Luce. This tradition has been carried through the years from generation to generation. On this day a week after the feast in Palermiti people from all over with ties to Palermiti and la Mado

nna reunite and reminisce about their lives, their families and most of all the love we have for our Patron Saint Madonna Della Luce. It makes you feel part of something bigger than yourself, more important then trivial everyday things. A reminder that we are all still connected through our faith, our town and the Madonna. I can’t even put it into the words, but you can feel the spirit of the Madonna on this day, as we eat, laugh, dance and celebrate with our family and friends VIVA MARIA SS DELLA LUCE!

The Mural will be painted across the street from the current church. They need our help to make this a reality. They have set a budget for the project and are hoping to reach their goal.
If you would like to help contribute to this project, please message me directly.

(Pictures are just for attention, the mural will revealed at a later date)

Below you will read the story of the Madonna della Luce and how all this came to be.

The year was 1720 when some farmers noticed a mysterious bright light, intrigued they decided to check it out.
The mysterious light was radiating from a painting on a wall depicting a madonna dressed in red with a blue cloak, on her left arm she carried baby Jesus and in her right hand a burning torch.
Many faithful people came to see for themselves, where they claimed many miracles happened.
Masons from neighboring villages tried to remove the painting to take it to a place that was more worthy, but the painting would not budge. Until, one day a man by the name of De Marco from Palermiti arrived on the spot who succeeded in detaching the painting from the wall with the first blow.
Since everyone wanted the painting they had to agree and in doing so they came to a solution.
The painting was to be placed on a cart pulled by oxen without a driver, where the cart would stop, there the painting would stay.
The cart crossed many villages and only when it reached Palermiti did the oxen kneel near the old church of San Giusto and would not move.

In 1783 the old church of San Giusto was destroyed by an earthquake, a chapel was set up to replace the destroyed church,
Time had passed but the new church was not built due to the indecision of the people
Day after day, where the current church is today, they noticed an ever-increasing pile of stones, but no one could tell you how they got there.
One night a curious lady stood looking out the window to discover the mystery;
At exactly midnight she saw a beautiful lady with a blue cloak carrying a stone on her head, the mysterious lady made three trips, at the end of the third trip she slowly walked away leaving a trail of light behind her (legend has it the woman was the Madonna).
The lady looking out the window astonished at what she had seen, rushed to inform the rest of the village.

There was no doubt, the new church had to be built there.
Nearly 300 years later, we still celebrate the Madonna della Luce, every August, people come home from all over the world to see her and celebrate in her name.

There is this one moment when she is carried out of the church to start the procession. The energy of the crowd cheering, the band playing, the big bangs start exploding, when you are overtaken with emotion and joy, it ripples through the crowd, giving you goosebumps. IT HAPPENS EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Nessuno riusciva a spiegarsi chi trasportasse quelle pietre.

Im sad to post that this year's feast has been cancelled due to Covid-19. This is the first time in over 60 years that we had to cancel the feast of the Madonna. May our beautiful mother watch over and pray for all of us in these difficult and uncertain times, so that we can all plan to celebrate together next year! God Bless, and may you all stay safe and healthy.
