The Jewish Mishpacha of Hillsdale College

The Jewish Mishpacha of Hillsdale College We welcome the interest and participation of our Christian and secular friends!

The Jewish Mishpacha of Hillsdale College is an organization that brings together Jewish students to create a "mishpacha," a family, through activities, events, and worship. Hillsdale Chavarah is an independent and unique student organization founded in early 2012. Events are open to both members and non-members, and persons of all faiths are welcome. Please feel free to contact any of our officers for further information on our Shabbat services and other events throughout the year.

Hillsdale College has stood for equality of opportunity for black students for 175 years. The Hillsdale afilliated Barney Charter School Initiative increases opportunities for inner city black children. Men and women, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, and Atheists, white, brown, or black, can all attend Hillsdale College and enrich their minds through the timeless wisdom of Hillsdale's curriculum.

What is unique to Hillsdale is that its support for racial justice is determined by principle, not politics. Hillsdale supports racial justice while maintaining a peaceful campus environment where the students' first responsibility is to learn. Hillsdale believes in celebrating, not denigrating America and its institutions. Hillsdale safeguards free speech and maintains a healthy respect for tradition. This is not a zero-sum game. Hillsdale uplifts all Americans and provides its young people with a timeless curriculum where ignorance is replaced by knowledge.

From all of us at the Hillsdale Chavarah, we wish our fellow Jews a happy and blessed Passover and our Christian friends a happy Easter. Attached is a fragment of Jewish life on our wonderful campus, Chavarah member Alan Kotlyar singing "Hinei Ma Tov" earlier this year. Hinei Ma Tov is an especially apropriate song for this time of isolation, as we remember with fondness how good it is when people come together in fellowship.

Tonight in the city of Hillsdale, Michigan, there were two Shabbat services happening simultaneously: one Orthodox and one Egalitarian. We may be small, and we may number just eight students and five adults, but we ain't going anywhere. That is, except for our traveling admissions counselor.

Much exciting news! Dr. Fincher will be starting a sequence of Biblical Hebrew in the fall and spring of next school year. Dr. Fincher also gave a talk on April 23rd titled "The Idea of Truth in the Jewish Talmud." SHALOM Club, a pro-Israel club that is separate from the Chavarah, invited Auschwitz survivor Irving Roth to campus, who talked to upwards of 100 students and faculty on April 25th. Four Chavarah club members had the pleasure of dining with him and being inspired by his incredible resilience, youthful appearance, and warm smile. Last but not least, we've heard from several Jewish students who have committed to be a part of the Class of 2022!

As the Jewish people approach this Passover season, it is important to reflect on what we cherish most in this life. We are a free people in a free land bestowed with inumerable blessings. At Hillsdale, students are daily inspired by their study of the goodness and beauty of life. Students are further called upon to be, themselves, a blessing unto the nations. As we are taught, I encourage you, dear reader, to do the same.

The Chavarah has had a fruitful semester so far. Visiting Classics Professor Dr. Fincher has provided the Chavarah with immeasurable support and knowledge about Judaism. We have codified our Friday evening Shabbat service, visited the U Michigan Hillel, attended lectures by speakers that have spoken about the IDF and Jewish/Christian relations, held High Holiday services on campus, enjoyed homemade, delicious Jewish cuisine prepared by our very own Sara Garfinkle, and welcomed 2 wonderful Jewish Freshmen to campus this year. Next semester some of us will be taking a class called Intro to Rabinnic Literature with Dr. Fincher. Our small size enables us to forge lifelong friendships with our fellow club members. There is much to be thankful for. Happy thanksgiving, everyone!
