From our own Salem Heideman: "I needed a place to land, where I could do some work that felt important, and have the space and time to sort out some of these questions."

Our last Service for Service meal is this Sunday, June 16, in the meeting hall at 332 NE 6th Ave. We'll open the doors at 10 a.m. and start serving food at 11. If you've ever been part of the weekly Service for Service meal, we'd love to have you join us for our final celebration. Folks who plan to be there include Sarah Navika Kendra Mason Purcell and Eric Muhr. We'll be serving pizza and ice cream and offering going-away gifts to each of our guests.

Stay tuned! Our weekly Wednesday-night worship group will be moving to a new location at the end of June. And in September, we plan to start collaborating with the drop-in center and meal program at Project Homeless Connect.

Suzanne “Suzy” Meree Hofferber, beloved daughter, sister, mother, and dear friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 63 on March 23, 2024, at OHSU Hillsboro Medical Center in Hillsboro, Oregon. Suzy’s journey began on May 31, 1960, in Tacoma, Washington, as the daughter of the late Philip and Patricia Crosbie Sr.

In addition to her children, Dasha Greidanus and Matthew Greidanus, Suzy is survived by her siblings, Philip (Kim) Crosbie, Cara (David) Parker, and Jason Crosbie, along with cherished nephews and nieces: Megan, Caitlin, Caleb and Jessica.

A dedicated member of the Hillsboro community, Suzy devoted her time and energy to volunteering at Hillsboro Friends Church, where she found great fulfillment in serving meals every Sunday. Her compassion touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those she encountered.

A celebration of Suzy’s life will be held at Hillsboro Friends Church on April 20th, 2024, at 3:00 pm, where friends and loved ones will come together to honor her memory, share stories, and find solace in each other’s company.

AFSC is holding an event, and all Quakers are invited!

On November 13, constituents of Earl Blumenauer, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley will be gathering in front of their offices to participate in a national day of action organized by AFSC. You can find information here https://afsc.org/November13. The purpose of this event is to build a memorial for the more than 10,000 people killed in Gaza, drawing attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis and demanding a cessation of funding to the Israeli military engaged in war crimes and ethnic cleansing in Gaza and the West Bank.

Here are the details for the event in Portland, Oregon:

🌹 Community Action: Build Memorials for Gaza🕊️

Who: All community members are welcome to participate

📅 When:

o 10 AM: Gathering at the offices of Ron Wyden (Suite 630) and Earl Blumenauer (Suite 200), 911 NE 11th Ave., Portland, OR, 97232

o 11:30 AM: Gathering at the office of Jeff Merkley (Suite 1400), 121 SW Salmon Street, Portland, OR 97204

🌸 Bring flowers, teddy bears, candles, art, poems, or any other heartfelt offerings to contribute to the memorials built outside their office buildings. Your presence and support matter.

🤝 Unity in Grief: Together, we mourn the lives lost and call for justice. Feel free to contribute items at any time throughout the day to add to the memorial.

This event is an opportunity for community members to come together, express solidarity, and call for a just and peaceful resolution to the conflicts in the region.

The number of guests at Service for Service on Sundays has been slowly increasing, and what we're experiencing at Hillsboro Friends is only a reflection of much larger issues. Erin Wilson at Silverton Area Community Aid recently posted that food pantries are seeing record numbers of people coming for food, and the supply of food often isn't enough to provide for everyone who needs food. Did you know that most of each meal we provide at Hillsboro Friends is sourced from donations to a local food bank?

What's going on? 1) The cost of food has risen 11 percent in the last year. 2) SNAP benefits were reduced at the end of March.

What can you do? 1) Donate food to food pantries. 2) Donate $$ to food pantries, as they can often get more food for those dollars than you can EVEN accounting for sales/coupons, etc. 3) Write to your state representatives (the Oregon House votes soon on Senate Bill 610 "Food for All Oregonians"), and tell them you support improving food access for everyone. 4) Tell others about the need, especially if they are able to donate food or $$.
