Genuine worship flows from a transformed heart. Those who have experienced the deepest lows in life typically experience the greatest highs with God.
A cheerful heart has known sorrow. A joyful life has pushed through pain.
In 2 Samuel 6:16 David experiences a deep low. He tries to bring the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem, but he does so on his own terms. He ushers in the presence of God with refinement and fanfare. As a result, terrible things happen.
David is confused and troubled, but he pressed into prayer. David doesn’t shy away from the hard things, he wrestles through them with God.
At the end, he emerges with a better understanding of God. He humbly brought the Ark back. This momentous occasion marks a significant event in Israel's history—the return of God's presence to the heart of the nation. King David begins dancing before the Lord with all his might, dressed as a commoner in the streets. As David leaped and danced before the Lord, he demonstrated the joy of true worship.
His wife, Michal, was disgusted. She didn’t think a king should be so undignified and loose. But David didn’t care about what he looked like. He wasn’t ashamed to dance and make fool of himself.
If worship is about you, then you’ll care about how you look or what you sound like. But if worship is about God, those things don’t matter.
Worship is a characterized by a deep reverence for God and a heartfelt desire to glorify Him in all that we do. When we worship the Lord with gladness and humility, our lives become fuller. We no longer care about vain things like looks and reputation. Our primary concern is about giving God glory through our lives.
Take time each day to worship the Lord with gladness, offering Him heartfelt praise and adoration for His goodness and faithfulness. Cultivate an attitude of gratitude, recognizing the blessings that God has bestowed upon you. In moments of joy and sorrow, seek God's presence, knowing that in His presence, there is fullness of joy. Pray for a deeper revelation of God's love and a greater understanding of the joy that comes from being in His presence.
