We all long for a place where we are welcomed, known and loved. Yet even our best experiences in this world often leave us wanting something more. In this new series, we'll explore how our longing for home shapes our hopes, influences our relationships and helps us understand some of our deepest struggles. Join us as we look to God's Word to discover our true home and learn how to live faithfully as we journey there.

God was at work in wonderful ways during our recent mission trip to Dulce, New Mexico. Thank you to everyone who prayed, gave and served to make it possible. We invite you to read about the trip and see a few highlights from our time together (link in our stories and bio).

In his book I'd Like You More If You Were More Like Me, Pastor John Ortberg talks about a concept from psychology called "bids." "A bid can be a question, a gesture, a look, a touch, any single expression that says, 'I want to feel connected to you.'" (p. 68) A bid is a relational invitation, seeking deeper connection. Since Christ calls us to grow in love for one another, we should take these bids for connection seriously.

Sometimes people say meaningful things that no one picks up on. They might say, "I don't think I'll ever call my mom again." Such a statement is often a quiet bid for connection, expressing a longing to be heard and understood. We can respond, "Oh, really? May I ask why?" They may not feel ready to share in that moment, but simply acknowledging their words sends a powerful message: "I care."

Do we imagine love to involve only big, dramatic gestures and great sacrifices? Sometimes it does. But more often, love is expressed in small, everyday moments as we notice and respond to another person's bid for connection.

After learning about "bids for connection" from Pastor Ortberg, I'm trying to include this idea in my daily prayers.

"Lord of love, give me ears to hear and eyes to see every bid for connection that comes my way today. Help me respond to each one with thoughtful love. Develop my ability to connect with others in ways that meet them where they are. In Your name I pray. Amen."

Several news stories in the past few weeks have pointed out the great joy and unity that has been on display during the World Cup this year. There are prayer circles, faith testimonies, and fans from multiple countries singing songs like, “Country Roads” by John Denver.

How wonderful when fans can unite over shared loves!

This reminds me of my trip to Ethiopia in 2014. Several leaders from my church in New Mexico visited the facilities of “Yezelalem Minch”. Yezelalem Minch served orphaned children in Addis Ababba, Ethiopia through many different ministries. We were blessed to be their partners.

I will never forget going to an Evangelical Ethiopian church with our host families. We didn’t understand their language but yet we did understand their joyous worship. We felt a common unity together over our shared love for Jesus.

In Ephesians 4:3, Paul says, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” One way we can keep the unity of the Spirit is to remind ourselves that we share a love for Jesus!

This Land Is Your Land

In June of 2017, I was driving from New Mexico to Canada for a summer class at Regent Seminary in Vancouver. I stayed overnight at a KOA near Jerome, Idaho, and heard This Land Is Your Land playing over an RV's speaker. What a wonderful song to hear after a day of traveling through the high desert and mountain regions of our beautiful country! How true it is that from "the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters," this land was made for you and me.

We ought to celebrate this beautiful land the Lord has given us. But this Fourth of July, we should also remember that this land was first home to Native peoples. A Native Christian friend once said to me, "You biligaanas (white folks) have a good song there. Just think about the Navajo when you sing that first line in Gallup."

That has stayed with me. It deepens the song and turns it into a reminder of both gratitude and respect.

Before any of us called this land home, however, it belonged to God. He knew where the mighty Mississippi would flow and where every peak of the Rocky Mountains would rise. He knew how tall the coastal cedars would grow and the glorious colors of the Grand Canyon. As Psalm 24:1 reminds us, "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it."

This land is His land, and He has been gracious to entrust it to us.

Happy Fourth of July!

What Discipleship Looks Like

On this Sunday after Father’s Day, we do a double take when we hear Jesus declare that unless we hate our father and mother, our wife, children, brothers and sisters, even ourselves, we cannot be his disciple! (Luke 14:25-27) Really? Who can possibly meet that standard? What does Jesus mean and what does he expect from his followers? Join us Sunday to find out!
