Friends,
I am grateful to announce the publication of Indispensable: Disability, the Body of Christ, and the Gifts of Belonging, a new book on disability ministry, inclusive church leadership, and gospel centered belonging. This book brings together fifteen local and global disability ministry leaders to share biblical theology, lived experience, and practical guidance for churches that desire to welcome, equip, and serve people with disabilities and their families. Grounded in Scripture and shaped by pastoral reflection, Indispensable calls the church to move from simple accessibility to true belonging, from accommodation to communion, and from good intentions to faithful discipleship. If you care about people with disability and the church, Christian leadership, inclusive worship, pastoral ministry, or the theology of suffering and weakness, this book will encourage and challenge you to see every life as essential in Christ. Learn more and order your copy today, and join the movement to strengthen disability ministry in the local church. Praise the Lord and thank you for your prayers and support.

Misunderstanding 6: Faith Guarantees the Healing of Disability

Many believers quietly carry the burden of wondering why healing has not come, especially when they have prayed faithfully for relief from disability or chronic illness. Scripture affirms that God is able to heal, yet it also reveals that true faith is rooted in trusting God’s presence and purpose even when physical healing does not occur. Disability is not a sign of weak faith or spiritual failure. It is one of the many places where God’s grace, strength, and sustaining love are revealed. The church is called to become a community where persons with disabilities are fully welcomed, valued, and empowered to serve, recognizing that every life reflects the image of God. As we grow in biblical understanding of faith, healing, and disability, we learn that God’s power is made perfect in weakness and his faithfulness remains unshaken in every circumstance.

This article is part of a series that addresses common misunderstandings about disability within the church. It examines one misconception through biblical, theological, and pastoral reflection, seeking to discern how believers with disabilities and those without disabilities can together build a he

Misunderstanding 5: All disabilities are basically the same.
Many churches unintentionally treat disability as a single category, yet Scripture and lived experience tell a far more complex story. Disabilities can be visible or invisible, congenital or acquired, physical, intellectual, developmental, or related to mental health, and each carries distinct needs, challenges, and gifts. When the church assumes that all disabilities are the same, it risks loving a category rather than honoring a person created in the image of God. First Corinthians 12 reminds us that the body of Christ is made of many different members and that those who seem weaker are indispensable to the whole. A faithful Christian response to disability begins with listening, learning, and offering concrete hospitality rather than quick assumptions. As the church grows in disability awareness, inclusive ministry, and theology of disability, we bear clearer witness to the gospel by welcoming believers with disabilities as full partners in worship, community, and mission.

Misunderstanding 4: People with disabilities want only healing.
Many churches in America still assume that the deepest and almost only desire of people with disabilities is physical healing, but Scripture calls us to a much fuller vision of disability and the church. When every conversation ends with “we will keep praying for your healing,” believers with disabilities can feel that their wider life, relationships, calling, work, and spiritual struggles are invisible. Jesus never reduced people to their diagnoses and saw the need for forgiveness, community, and restoration of relationship with God as well as the body. The primary purpose of every believer, with or without disability, is to glorify God in all things (Isa. 43:7; 1 Cor. 10:31), which means the most faithful prayer for disabled Christians is not only for cure but for a life that honors God in family, vocation, friendship, worship, and daily faithfulness. A truly inclusive church community listens to the actual prayer requests of people with disabilities, values their gifts, and seeks God’s shalom in every part of life. When disability ministry is shaped by this holistic vision, the church becomes a house of prayer for all people and a living witness of the gospel to a watching world.

Misunderstanding 3: “People with disabilities cannot communicate.” Many churches assume communication is impossible when speech is unclear, responses are slow, or someone uses ASL, AAC, gestures, or nonverbal expression. Scripture teaches that every person bears the image of God, which includes God given relational capacity that is not measured by verbal fluency. God called Moses despite slow speech (Exodus 4), and Jesus met a deaf man through touch, gesture, and presence (Mark 7). The real barrier is often our impatience, not their inability. When the church learns diverse “languages” and practices patient listening, people with disabilities become essential members who strengthen the body of Christ.

Praise the Lord!

My family traveled from Las Vegas to California and had a wonderful time with dear friends and the Lord’s guidance, with no major problems along the way. I stayed in Las Vegas with my uncle’s family for two days and ate some of the best spicy noodles with a whole squid in the bowl and Korean cold noodle and BBQ. No, I did not gamble. It was very tempting eveyry time I passed by fancy slot machines.

While in California, I preached at two different churches (New Life Vision Church and Cerritos Mission Church) and visited the headquarters of Joni and Friends. I also had the privilege of meeting Joni in person, which was as meaningful as you can imagine. She is truly one of my heroes of faith. In addition, I met with the leaders of Shalom Disability Ministry (Moses Park and Sungchil Park), one of our KGC DMin professors, Joonmin Kang, as well as Pastor Dae Hyuk Yoon, Pastor Kyong Kim, Pastor An Hwan, Pastor Philip Yoon, and my best friend. It was a deeply blessed time.

I was deeply grateful for their support, prayers, and time. Their faith and sacrificial effort for the kingdom of God encouraged me and renewed my motivation. Thank you for your prayers and support as well.
