Saturday Night Weather Update!
Dear Parishioners,
We hope and pray that all of you are doing well to prepare for this storm this weekend. Please be sure to add a prayer for all those who may be homeless, all those who might need to travel or work in these conditions, and all those affected by this winter storm.
Important updates:
Since the last update that we sent out midday, the forecast has shifted to more ice and for it to start earlier. The AccuWeather hourly forecast is now calling for up to a quarter-inch of ice by 9-10am, when the 8:30 Mass would be letting out. From that point, the ice continues throughout the day, only getting worse. I truly do not like to do this since worshiping God is our most important duty in life and the Mass is the highest form of prayer, but I think considering the ice, the steps at our churches, and the likely treacherous roads, we must cancel all the Masses tomorrow (Sunday), at least as far as in-person attendance goes. I am thankful for all who attended Masses this evening, and I am pleased that both Masses were very well attended. Praise God for your devotion!
Be assured that the obligation to attend Mass is lifted whenever travel becomes unsafe.
Here are some steps that you can take to still keep the Lord's Day Holy, as we are called to do:
1. Watch a livestream Mass. We tried to get one set up for our parishes, but it was going to be too much with such short notice... but perhaps you can find one on EWTN (8am), the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart (9am?), or the Basilica in DC (already available). While nothing compares with being physically present at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, when such attendance is impossible, watching it virtually and praying along with the prayers is a praiseworthy practice.
2. Read through the Mass Readings - found here: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/012526.cfm
3. Make an act of spiritual communion - found here: Spiritual Communion
4. Pray the Liturgy of the Hours - found here: Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer
To summarize:
SUNDAY
St. Peter's 8:30am is now CANCELLED.
St. John's 9:00am is CANCELLED.
St. Peter's 10:45am is CANCELLED.
St. Patrick's 10:45am is now CANCELLED. I will celebrate a private Mass with only the back ramp door unlocked.
St. John's 12:30pm en español is now CANCELLED.
All other parish activities have also been cancelled.
At this point, there is no further need for updates, so please just stay safe and warm. Be prepared for power outages and dangerous travel conditions. And pray that we emerge from this without any great damage.
One last thing... while we must cancel Masses, we know that many may still wish to give their weekly offering. We would not mind that at all, as we must still pay the utilities, staff salaries, and other expenses even when it snows.
