Day 2 of KAIROS Camp focused on how Communion is embodied. That means that this meal we share is REAL bread for REAL bodies and that if at the table we are made into Christ’s body, we are then sent out to really be Christ’s body for the world. We did stations where we made communion chalices, added prayers to an altar cloth/parament, explored who’s welcome at the table with sidewalk chalk, and practiced what “presiding” at the table could feel like.

Our camp program this week is called KAIROS. It’s a confirmation camp of 70 (mostly) middle school youth learning about our faith. This year’s theme is “Communion” and our primary leader is a familiar face in Pastor Emily Harkins from The Dwelling in Winston-Salem. Monday’s theme was “Communion is a journey” and how the meal is a way that God sustains us on the way. We sang songs, explored the theme in small groups, played games, and then all the other camp stuff—like crafts!

Yesterday, a mixed group of youth from Emmanuel and Grace Lutheran had lunch and then hit the road to head up the mountain for a formative and fun experience at Lutheridge. Everyone was checked in for the start of the camp week, and the night ended with opening worship at lakeside (see comment below).

Today, we honor the memory of the Emanuel Nine and continue to commit ourselves to the work of justice, reconciliation and faith.

"Creator God,

You lovingly created every person in Your beautiful image. We confess that we have not loved and protected Your beloved creation well. Racism and hate continue to blossom, disfiguring Your beautiful and divine plan for human life.

Help our unbelief, O God, in the realities of racism and oppression; remove the scales from our eyes and our hearts. Forgive us for our participation, both knowingly and unknowingly, in its flourishing. Give us the courage to remember and share these true stories of cruelty and injustice, and those who, because of it, lost their lives and freedom. Grant us determination and an accountable community to interrupt these unjust systems. Help us to use our voices, our agency, and our faith to advocate for justice.

Amen."

On Thursday, we were recognized by Sylvia Mendez Newcomers School, alongside many other volunteers and partners, for our support this school year at their annual Volunteers & Partners Appreciation Luncheon. (Sylvia Mendez Newcomers is a special school where immigrants and refugees that are new to High Point and the U.S. spend their first semesters.)

When we began our partnership, we asked Grace, the school’s social worker, what support was needed and she suggested funding attendance incentives. So that’s one thing we’ve been doing to help past two years. We’ve provided regular funds to support the work their attendance team is doing to ensure their students are receiving the education they need.

They shared on Thursday that one of their goals this year was increasing their daily attendance rate by at least 1%. They joyfully shared that this year the rate was 94.2%—a 3% increase from last year. Our work is surely not the only reason for this, but we are proud to partner with the school’s gifted leaders and help do our part. Because after all, that’s what partnership is all about—doing more together than we can by ourselves.
