Over the last 6 weeks, Jesus talked about prayer, about letting go of anxiety, about not judging. He’s talked about choosing to live by the spirit of the law, and not just the letter. Last week we read the wonderful words, “Seek, and you will find; ask, and it will be given; knock, and the door ...

Sunday used to feel like a different kind of day. Not because it had more hours, but because people used them differently.

Many of us remember it clearly. Stores were closed or open short hours. The pace of the whole town slowed down. And families followed a rhythm that nobody had to plan, because it was simply what Sunday was.

There was a proper meal, often in the middle of the day, with the whole family at the table. Afterward, you might visit grandparents or drive out to see relatives, or call the ones who lived too far away just to catch up.

Some families took a Sunday drive with no destination at all, just to look at the countryside. Someone read the newspaper slowly, section by section, with a second cup of coffee.

Many went to church or gathered with their community. There was time outside, a walk, a game in the yard, sitting on the porch. And in the evening, clothes were laid out and lunches were packed so Monday would start a little easier.

Most of all, people rested without feeling guilty about it. The day was allowed to be slow.

Life is different now, and many of us work weekends or juggle schedules that do not stop for Sunday. But a little of that old rhythm is still within reach.

Eat one unhurried meal together this Sunday.
Call a relative just to talk.
Leave a few hours of the day completely unplanned.

Sunday did not have more hours. We just did not try to fill every one of them.

This famous quotation is from Psalm 118:24 -- "This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." Our sign board isn't quite big enough to hold the full quotation.

Our reading this morning is about an incredible choice which was faced by the early church. Up till this point, the people who were a part of the Christian movement pretty much all belonged to the Jewish tradition.

New counter tops in the old kitchen! Special thanks to Michael Jones who custom-made these bright new counters and back splash. This used to be the main kitchen at Springfield from 1949 to 1970 when the new fellowship hall and kitchen were built. The old countertops were horrible -- dark red linoleum covered with scorch marks from hot pots and pans, peeling and crumbling. We're using this area now for FEMAP (Friends Emergency Material Assistance Program) and it's also available for crafts and other activities.

Saw this family sunning themselves in the cemetery this morning -- too big to be fox, likely coyotes. They loped off into the woods as soon as they saw me. Nice to know your neighbors!

Good morning, Friends! Thank you all for coming today. I want to start this morning with a special reading for Father’s Day. It was written by a Jewish scholar, about 180 years before the time of Jesus. We’re reading from this book in our midweek Bible study.
