Hickory Withe Presbyterian Church - PCA Founded in 1834, Hickory Withe Presbyterian Church is an historic congregation in west Fayette County, Tennessee.

What We Believe:

That the Gospel is the "good news of the Kingdom of God" given to all people by God for us to know and believe Him...
The Gospel teaches us that we are more sinful than we ever dared to believe or admit; the good news is that, through Jesus Christ's life, death, resurrection and eternal intercession on our behalf, we are more loved, more accepted, more forgiven than we ever

dared hope or dream. Though, in our sin, we were enemies of God, through Jesus Christ, His Son, we are reconciled to Him, adopted as His sons and daughters, and granted eternal security by His grace through our faith in Him. That the church is a people who God has called His own and who He has given to each other for love and community...
The Bible describes the church as people who belong to God and to each other, gathered together by belief in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord and, by their mutual reconciliation to God through the Gospel. The church is not simply a building or meeting place, nor is it merely a place of religious observation, but a living and growing community of men, women and children whose identity is shaped by love through our belonging to God and to each other. That our reconciliation to God through the Gospel compels us to live transformed lives...
The truth of the Gospel re-creates us into a people whose lives are transformed by a commitment and passion for God and His glory. God has uniquely called and equipped His church to display and demonstrate the power of the Gospel to transform individuals and communities. Just as the Gospel is the "good news of the Kingdom of God", the church is a foretaste of the Kingdom of God on earth, struggling, learning and growing together in an understanding of what it means to follow Christ with the whole of our lives. We are a Presbyterian and Reformed congregation and hold firmly to the system of beliefs and doctrine found in the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Westminster Catechisms.

The sermon on Sunday, September 13, 2026, will be from Malachi 4:1-3 – The Sun of Righteousness.

“Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.” Romans 6:8

Paul never tires of stretching our minds with challenging concepts. In Romans 6, he teaches that when Christ died, believers also died with him. And, when Christ was raised from the dead, believers were also resurrected. You say, “I don’t understand that!” Neither do I! There is certainly a large degree of wonderful mystery in the teaching. But its implications are clear – believers must consider themselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus (6:11).

HWPC announcements for the week of September 7, 2026:

Sunday School classes are held every Sunday for all ages at 10 AM. In Adult Sunday School on September 13, 2026, RE Tod Stoner will teach from Titus, 2:1-10.

Worship Service Sermon - The sermon on Sunday, September 13, 2026, will be Malachi 4:1-3 – The Sun of Righteousness. Reverend Jim Carnes will be the supply pastor. Jim Carnes serves as Minister of Music at South Woods Baptist Church in Germantown, Tennessee.

Women’s prayer time - Women meet each Sunday at 9:15 a.m. to pray for HWPC and our communities.

Wednesday Night Bible study – Wednesday Night Bible studies will meet Wednesday, September 9, 2026. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. with prayers and Bible study at 7:00 p.m. Joe Johnson will facilitate our class on The Holiness of God by R.C. Sproul.

Nursery coverage - Nursery is provided every Sunday for children under the age of five. Volunteers are to arrive at 10:45 a.m. to allow the Sunday school teachers time to transition to worship.

Men’s Bible Study - The men will meet on Sunday, September 13th at 4 p.m. Deacon Steve Truax will teach Chapter 16, Perseverance, from The Christian Life by Sinclair Ferguson.

Women’s Bible Study - The women will resume their studies in October with a new study, Dust to Glory, by R.C. Sproul.

Ladies’ monthly luncheon is the second Thursday of each month. Next luncheon will be on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Longhorn on Hwy 64 in Wolf Chase area. Contact Debbi Schweizer if you have questions.

Women’s prayer time - Women meet each Sunday at 9:15 a.m. to pray for HWPC and our communities. Location varies, but typically the ladies meet in the school classroom in the fellowship hall.

Wednesday Night Bible study – Wednesday Night Bible studies will meet Wednesday, September 2, 2026. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. with prayers and Bible study at 7:00 p.m. Pastor Doug will continue our study in Micah.

“How can we who died to sin still live in it?” Romans 6:2
I heard an old preacher say one time, “We are not saved by law keeping, but we are saved unto law keeping.” We are not saved by our obedience to the 10 Commandments. We are saved by God’s grace through faith apart from any works we perform (Ephesians 2:8-9). But, in the new birth, God gives his people a new heart – he removes “the heart of stone” and replaces it with a “heart of flesh.” He causes his people to walk in his statutes and obey his rules (Ezekiel 36:26-27). We die to sin and we begin to delight in the law of God (Romans 7:22).

The sermon on Sunday, August 30, 2026, will be from Ephesians 3:14-21 - Paul's Prayer for Ephesus and for Us.

“… that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations.” Psalm 67:2

The “Aaronic benediction” (Num. 6:24-26) is regularly pronounced at the end of public worship by ministers in the Presbyterian and Reformed tradition. The psalmist, in Psalm 67, also has Aaron’s benediction in mind. We see this in verse 1, “May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, ….” There is a purpose, however, as you see in verse 2, attending the blessing. God showers the blessings of his grace and favor upon us so, “… that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations.” He blesses us so that we might, in turn, be a blessing to others. And those “others” are not only our neighbors across the street, but our fellow human beings across the oceans. Psalm 67 is the missionary’s psalm. May God help us to make it our own and to, “… climb the steeps, and cross the waves; ….”

The sermon on Sunday, August 23, 2026, will be Matthew 26:17-35 - The Lord's Supper: The New Testament Institution.

“This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
1 Corinthians 11:24

The bread and wine in the Lord’s Supper are sensible signs which remind us of the great love Jesus Christ has for his people. God uses his Word to communicate his grace to us through preaching (Romans 14:13-17), but he also uses the sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper (Matt. 26-26-28; 28:19). When administered appropriately with prayer and the working of the Holy Spirit, they become effectual means of salvation. The One who was rich became poor for our sakes, so that we through his poverty might be made rich (2 Cor. 8:9). These simple sacraments remind us of Christ’s gracious condescension to us, so that we are made fit to ascend to his heavenly throne (Col. 3:1-4).
