🔸 Monday of the Holy Spirit 🕊️ 🔸

Today, the day following Holy Pentecost, is the Monday of the Holy Spirit. On this day, we honour the Life-Creating, Omnipotent and All-Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Holy Trinity, who proceeds eternally from the Father beyond the limits of time. Sharing one essence with the Father and the Son, He is worshipped and glorified together with Them. Just as He descended upon Christ in the form of a dove during His baptism in the Jordan River, so too did the Holy Spirit descend upon the Apostles at Pentecost in the form of fiery tongues, fulfilling Christ’s promise that He would pray the Father to send the Comforter to His disciples (John 14:16).

Filled with the Holy Spirit and having received the gift of speaking in tongues, the Apostles began their mission to preach Christ to the end of the earth (Acts 1:8). Thus, on the day of Pentecost, the Church received the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit, who continues to preserve and guide her “into all truth” (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit is called the Comforter because, in His love for mankind, He strengthens us in our weakness, intercedes before God on our behalf (Romans 8:26), and dwells within all who are united to Christ.

In Orthodox iconography, the Holy Spirit is represented by the image of a dove because He appeared in this manner at the baptism of Christ. Yet, just as the Son is not literally a lamb despite appearing symbolically as one in Scripture, so too the Holy Spirit is not a dove by nature. The dove serves as a visible sign of His manifestation to mankind, while His true divine essence remains invisible, uncircumscribed and beyond human comprehension. Prayer to the Holy Spirit: “Heavenly King, Comforter, the Spirit of truth, everywhere present and filling all things, Treasury of blessings and Giver of Life, come and dwell in us; cleanse us of every stain and save our souls, gracious One.”

Today, on the Feast of Pentecost, we celebrate the Birthday of the Church.

The Church is more than an institution. She is more than a non-profit organization. She is more than a building of stone and wood. She is the living Body of Christ, filled with the life of the Holy Spirit and radiant with the presence of God.

She is the Ark of Salvation, carrying her children safely through the storms of this world toward the harbor of the Kingdom.

She is a loving Mother who feeds, nourishes, teaches, comforts, and guides her children with patience and mercy. And like any good mother, she corrects and disciplines her children when necessary so that they may grow in righteousness, holiness, integrity, and honor before the Lord.

She is a spiritual hospital where wounded souls find healing, where the broken find hope, where sinners find forgiveness, and where all who thirst may drink from the Fountain of Life.

She is the Household of God, where strangers become family and where men and women of every nation, language, and background are united in the love and person of Christ.

She is the Bride of Christ, adorned with holiness and beauty, calling all people to the joy of communion with God.

She is the New Jerusalem, the City of the Living God, where heaven touches earth and eternity shines through the sacred mysteries.

In the Church, we discover who we truly are. In the Church, we learn to pray, to love, to forgive, to serve, and to become by grace what God created us to be.

Today, as we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, let us give thanks for the great gift of the Church—the living, breathing family of God, empowered by the Holy Spirit and sent into the world as a witness to the love of Christ.

Happy Feast of Pentecost!

Holy Pentecost, commemorated on the 50th day after Pascha.

Glory to Thee, our God! Glory to Thee!

Troparion — Tone 8
Blessed are You O Christ Our God / You have revealed the fishermen as most wise / by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit / through them You drew the world into Your net / O Lover of Man, Glory to You!

Kontakion — Tone 8
When the most High came down and confused the tongues, / He divided the nations; / but when he distributed the tongues of fire / He called all to unity. / Therefore, with one voice, we glorify the All-holy Spirit!

In the Church’s annual liturgical cycle, Pentecost is “the last and great day.” It is the celebration by the Church of the coming of the Holy Spirit as the end—the achievement and fulfillment—of the entire history of salvation. For the same reason, however, it is also…
