Dear HCC Family,
There are few more thankless tasks than being an official for a sporting event.

To be an umpire for baseball games, a referee for football or basketball games, or a referee for soccer or wrestling matches is to invite a level of abuse that few other professions can match. Every official is supposed to get every call or decision right, and when they don't, look out. Officials at the professional level receive compensation that makes the vitriol somewhat worth it. Almost every official for youth sports, however, gets paid far less while being held to the same high standards.

Few consider that without officials to maintain the standards of competition intrinsic in each sport, there would be no way to confirm that the games were being played correctly. Left to their own devices, players will always make officiating decisions according to their own best interests. The standards officials provide make the competition matter. When those standards get confused or misapplied, the games lose their meaning.

Standards are vital in every area of life, and when they get confused or misapplied, people can lose sight of their meaning and purpose. The Apostle Paul addresses these issues throughout his letters, including our text for this Sunday.

Join us on Sunday as I present the next installment of our message series titled Solid Ground: Counsel For The Church. In Colossians 2:16-23, Paul addresses how our identity in Christ establishes our standards for life. When other standards are presented, they can be destructive to individuals and to the Church. We'll discuss the problem the Colossians faced and learn how best to address similar issues in the modern Church.

The 5th Sunday of each month is a Family Worship Sunday at HCC. Instead of our normal Children's Ministry programs, we'll offer activity sheets and crayons for your children to work on throughout the service.

See you Sunday!

Dear HCC Family,
Do you have an anchor?

Ships and boats need anchors to avoid being swept up by waves and tides. Walls of homes need anchors to prevent them from falling over when the wind blows. Trees need deep roots to anchor them to the ground during storms. The function of these anchors is clear: they provide stability.

People need anchors, too. Not just to keep from being blown by the wind, but to keep from being displaced from their identity by the storms of culture and ideas that we are surrounded by. If we don't tend our anchor well, we will find ourselves drifting or shipwrecked in short order.

Join us on Sunday as I present the next message in our series titled Solid Ground: Counsel For The Church. We will examine Colossians 2:6-15, a profound explanation of how the Gospel attaches us to the true anchor of our lives: Jesus. Come be encouraged by our discussion of Paul's explanation of why we can trust Jesus to be our anchor, and consider whether you can see some of the outcomes of being anchored to Jesus in your own life.

We will also take time to reflect on those who have given their lives in the service of our country on this Memorial Day weekend.

See you Sunday!

MidWeek Series concludes May 20
Stuff We Don't Want To Talk About
6:30pm - Worship Center

Join us as we conckude this five-part series, tackling some of the most difficult and consequential topics of our time: politics, language, s*x, money, and entertainment. These issues affect so many aspects of our lives, but talking about them from a Biblical perspective can often be uncomfortable. We'll search God's word for the truth about how to think and act in each of these areas.

This week, we'll focus on what the Bible says about money. There are more verses in the Bible about money or property than almost any other subject. God is clearly concerned with how we manage the resources he has given us, so let's look together at what He wants us to know and how we might need to adjust our thinking on this important topic.

See you there!

Dear HCC Family,
How do you know anything?

In a few weeks, many thousands of students will receive a piece of paper that represents the culmination of a massive amount of work. Whether it's from middle school, high school, college, or post-graduate work, these students will throw those awkward square-topped hats into the air to celebrate that the people in charge of evaluating academic progress have acknowledged their achievements and granted them the rights and privileges that the diploma confers.

Most of our educational system is based on measuring how well students know things. Facts, ideas, processes, names, dates; it's all part of the flow of information that students are tested on. But how does this knowledge get passed on? People and words.

If you have ever learned anything in your life, at all, ever, it happened because people used words. People came before you to acquire the knowledge that they then passed on to you, and that knowledge was, at some basic level, made up of words. Ideas, propositions, concepts, images, definitions, applications, and corrections all, at their roots, use words to accomplish something incredible.

This Sunday, I will offer the next installment of our message series titled Solid Ground: Counsel For The Church. We will examine Colossians 1:24-2:5, wherein Paul describes how God uses the majestic, unlikely, incredible confluence of people and words to change lives. Join us as we consider what God has done through unlikely people and "mysterious" words to ensure that we can know Him and obey Him.

Join us after church for our Annual Business Meeting and Church Picnic! All are invited to stay for our business meeting, as members will vote on our proposed Constitutional changes, the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, and three men standing for election to new 3-year terms as Lay Elders. You can find the information packets for the meeting on our website, www.hesperiacommunitychurch.org. Then, stay and enjoy fellowship at our church picnic. Panera box lunches will be provided along with games and activities for all ages.

See you Sunday!

Stuff We Don't Want To Talk About
6:30pm - Worship Center

Join us as we continue this five-part series, tackling some of the most difficult and consequential topics of our time: politics, language, s*x, money, and entertainment. These issues affect so many aspects of our lives, but talking about them from a Biblical perspective can often be uncomfortable. We'll search God's word for the truth about how to think and act in each of these areas.

This week, we'll focus on what the Bible says about entertainment. This discussion is based on the cultural transformation of commonly held beliefs about entertainment, which has resulted in a wide range of troubling outcomes in our modern society. A measurable number of Christians have shifted with society, affirming the appropriateness of entertainment content that would have been universally rejected not long ago. Let's look to God's word and see what we discover about how we can respond Biblically to our entertainment options.

Dear HCC Family,
How well do you focus?

We will expend a lot of resources in pursuit of focus. For example, I have multiple pairs of glasses these days. The one I wear most is designed to help me focus at various distances, while my secondary one helps me focus when reading or writing. One pair has special features to help me focus at night, and I used to have a pair that turned into sunglasses whenever I went outside. Without these tools, focusing would be a lot harder for me.

Of course, our vision is not the only control mechanism for our focus. Our hearts and minds provide us with help and hindrance in focusing. Some are predisposed to constantly change focus, which is why a recent study showed that we check our phones between 144 and 186 times a day. Others easily lose focus in conversation, in class, or even in church. We are not powerless to control our focus, however. Bearing down, grinding it out, and locking in are all phrases commonly used to encourage greater focus.

Believers have one overarching point of focus: Jesus. The more we focus on our Savior, the more holy and righteous our lives become. It's always been easy to lose focus on Jesus, which is why so many Bible passages call us to refocus on our Savior. This week, I will offer the next installment of our message series titled Solid Ground: Counsel For The Church. We'll focus on Colossians 1:15-23, a deeply profound explanation of who Jesus is and how He affects our lives. These ideas are well worth focusing on, so I hope you'll join us for an encouraging discussion.

We will also celebrate Mother's Day with a special video and gift for all our moms!

See you Sunday!

This week, we'll focus on what the Bible says about s*x and s*xuality. Sexual choices matter to God, and Scripture contains clear commands about how we should live in light of Creation and design. Join us for this important conversation, and let's explore how we obey God in this vital aspect of life.

Dear HCC Family,
Have you checked your status lately?

status (n.): the position of an individual in relation to another or others, especially in regard to social or professional standing

The rise of social media has made this term far more common than it used to be. There are many platforms where we can update people on our status at any given time. And when I say "any given time," I'm not kidding. It is possible to find updates from people who want to report on everything from the meal they are eating, who they are dating, the quality of their day, the cute video or meme they just saw, to more important things like health or prayer needs.

I often wonder if it would be more helpful to normalize sharing the status of our faith than the status of our lunch. What would it mean to share regularly about the richness of our quiet times, the struggle of trusting Jesus through trials, the encouragement of Jesus-centered community, or genuine questions about Jesus? How would our lives change if these were at the top of our "to-share lists?"

This Sunday, we'll continue our message series titled Solid Ground: Counsel For The Church. We are launching our study of the last book in the series, Colossians. As with many of his letters, Paul begins his letter to the Colossians with a status report. Colossians 1:1-14 summarizes what the Colossian Christians have, what they need, and what they know. Such a status report provides a model for how we can think about our faith. Join us as we consider Paul's model status report, and let's check our status together.

We'll partake of communion at the end of our gathering.

See you Sunday!

This week, we'll focus on what the Bible says about language. The words we use have tremendous power, and it's important for believers to remember the impact of our words, for good and for evil. We'll review several passages that help us understand our language choices must be driven by our faith above all else.

Dear HCC Family,
Join us this Sunday for the next installment of our message series, Solid Ground: Counsel for the Church. Elder Mark Ziesmer will guide our discussion of Philippians 4:1-23 in a message titled "Unity, Joy, Peace, Being Generous." Here's his intro:

"Four of the most often quoted verses in the Bible are in this one chapter. We invite you now to skim through the chapter and see if you can see these four verses. There's good reason why they are quoted so much. Chapter four, based on what was taught in the previous chapters, is all about how the ideas Paul teaches in chapters 1-3 apply to our lives. As you prepare to hear God's word to us, be prepared to let God highlight at least one thing from this beautiful chapter to apply to your life now."

Following the service at 11:30am, we will host our Deacon Ministry Informational Meeting in the Worship Center. If you are curious about what it means to be a Deacon, join us for a teaching and discussion time. Attending the meeting is the first step in our selection process for Deacons at HCC, and we will follow up with any member interested in further discussion of the Deacon role in the weeks following the meeting.

See you Sunday!
