After retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1972, Rev. Roberts worked as a Capitol Police Officer serving under Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. While at Mt. Pleasant he established the Education Scholarship Committee, Gospel Chorus, New Members Club, Sunbeams, Young Adult Chorale Ensemble and the Food Bank.

Rev. Roberts satisfied the requirements to receive the Bachelor of Theology Degree from the Southern Bible Seminary of Kansas City, Missouri before entering Howard University School of Divinity, where he received his Master of Divinity in 1984. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humanity Degree from the Southern Bible Seminary in Brunswick, GA.

Rev. Roberts, a native of Williamsburg, VA, attended Hampton Institute for a year and a half before joining the U.S. Air Force, from which he retired honorably in 1972. Rev. Roberts received his call to the Gospel Ministry in 1974 and attended the Washington Baptist Theological Seminary, graduating in 1978. He was licensed and ordained at First Baptist Church of Glenarden (Maryland).

The notices in the 1978 Sunday Bulletin included “This morning we are delighted to welcome to our church the minister, Rev. Lloyd Roberts and his family”. Rev. Roberts was guest minister on March 12, 1978, later that year to become MPBC pastor.
