James tells the truth about us with startling clarity: with the same mouth we bless God and sometimes wound those made in God’s likeness. “My brothers and sisters, this should not be so.” (James 3:10) A spring cannot pour out both fresh and bitter water. A fig tree cannot bear olives. Our words reveal the source we’re drawing from. Read this week's full blog post on doing no harm with our words: https://www.cofumc.org/blog/do-no-harm

I was standing in a small cemetery outside Concord, New Hampshire the first time Memorial Day felt personal. I was just eight years old, tagging along with my grandfather as he placed a small flag beside the headstone of a man I had never met, before heading over to those from our family who had served their country with honor. That morning was quiet except for the sound of his boots in the grass. He didn’t say much, he rarely did. But he paused long enough for me to notice the way his hand trembled slightly as he straightened the flag. Read this week's full blog here: https://www.cofumc.org/blog/a-living-faith-that-remembers

There’s a moment in The Fellowship of the Ring when Frodo, overwhelmed by the weight of the Ring and the danger surrounding him, says quietly: “I wish the Ring had never come to me.” It’s a confession of exhaustion, fear, and limitation — the kind of honesty the apostle Paul would recognize. And Gandalf the wizard responds with a grace-filled truth: “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
