Paul Wolfe serves as Dean of Online Students for Westminster Theological Seminary, where he received his Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees. Prior to his position at Westminster, Paul pastored New Hope Presbyterian Church in Fairfax, Virginia for twenty-five years. He and his wife Christy live in Fairfax. Their three children, Philip, Henry, and Charlotte, are students at the University of Virginia.

Paul is the author of My God Is True: Lessons Learned Along Cancer’s Dark Road (2009), Setting Our Sights on Heaven: Why It’s Hard and Why It’s Worth It (2011), and Suffering: God’s Purpose in Our Pain (2023).

Last Sunday, Pastor Bill preached on Jacob’s Theft through the theme of inheritance. Jacob and Esau both misunderstand their inheritance — Esau scorns it, trading something priceless for immediate gratification; Jacob tired to seie it through manipulation and deception. Both approaches reveal the same underlying problem: failing to test Gods promises.

The good news is that Jesus succeeds where Jacob, Esau, and all of us fail. He values the true inheritance and then shares it freely with those to trust in him. Because Jesus has secured our inheritance, we no longer need to chase the wrong things or pretend to be someone we’re not.

Many of us experience Jacob’s desire for achievement and approval, yet we are also reminded that God’s faithfulness is often present even in seasons where he seems absent.
